Weber head football coach Mo Cannon knew his team faced a tough task when it traveled south to take on Lehi on Friday night.
The Pioneers have established themselves as one of the top programs in the state, while Cannon is working to get the Warriors closer to that level.
So even though the outcome was a disappointingly one-sided 42-8 defeat for Weber, Cannon still felt like there was important value in the experience.
“I played at a high level, so for me it’s never a loss without a lesson,” Cannon said. “There is a lot we can learn from this situation, something we’ll get to work on right away when we watch the film.”
The Warriors had a tough time slowing Lehi’s multi-faceted offense and fell behind 28-0 at halftime.
Meanwhile, Weber’s talented offensive stars weren’t able to get on track until late in the game, when sophomore quarterback Carter Payne connected with senior Josh Hamblin for a 75-yard touchdown pass and followed that up by converting a two-point conversion pass to junior Reese Cantwell to prevent the shutout.
Cannon said he wanted his guys to be put in some tough positions against good opponents so they can understand what it requires to succeed.
“When we created the schedules during the offseason, I prepped these guys for a tough preseason,” Cannon said. “I knew exactly what I wanted to get into because I knew exactly where I want to go. For me, I’ve got to get these guys around the best competition in order for them to be able to really relish it. Now we get into region, and they’re not going to see anybody the size of those dudes that we just saw (at Lehi). I think with what we’ve got going, we’re super excited with where this team is going to be, for sure.”
He believes the next step for his squad is making sure that the bumps in the road don’t have a negative impact on the chemistry of the team.
“It’s about coming together and making sure we are all together as one,” Cannon said. “One thing we are always going to do is battle together for 48 minutes, but I’ve got to make sure we are not getting into situations where we are pointing fingers or getting mad at each other. That’s not needed. If we make sure we stay together, we’ll be just fine.”
Weber (2-3) will start region play when it heads to Farmington on Sept. 19 for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
