CLEARFIELD — West Field sophomore midfielder Marissa Hatch has scored five goals this season and, while all are memorable, there may be two that stand out.

Earlier this year, Hatch netted a penalty kick in a 1-0 victory over Northridge, and she was again center stage against Clearfield on Tuesday night.

In a match between teams near the top of the Region 5 standings, Hatch scored the only goal of the game in the 61st minute and West Field foiled senior night, clipping the Falcons 1-0.

Longhorn sophomore forward Kate Marriott passed a kick to the middle of the field and Hatch made it count.

“We had a through ball over on the side; I had an open space in the middle and just had to make sure to keep it down, stay calm and finish the ball,” Hatch said. “I have to play my game, trust my teammates and perform in those situations.”

Box Elder (11-4, 9-2 Region 5) won Tuesday night and now has sole possession of first place, with West Field (11-6, 8-3), Clearfield (8-7, 8-3) and Bonneville (11-5, 8-3) one game behind.

“It was definitely a big game; there was a lot on the line, especially their senior night and all,” Hatch said. “We had to believe we could do it and needed to play to our best abilities. We did that and pulled out the win.”

Harlie Slaughter was in goal for the Longhorns and credited her defense for shutting down Clearfield.

“We worked together; our communication was great and we won the 50-50 balls,” Slaughter said. “It’s important to be there for my team. Throughout the whole game, I needed to keep a clean sheet and be there for them. … I know they’ll put points on the board.”

Clearfield only had three good shots on frame the entire game, and all three might have gone in on another day.

Senior captain Kamryn Weaver drilled a free kick that Slaughter stretched high to knock off the top of the crossbar. Another Falcon shot caromed off the bottom of the crossbar, smashed to the ground and somehow didn’t cross the line.

But the one that hurt most was a Tatum Thomas shot, which eluded Slaughter and ended up inside the back corner of the net before being waived off by officials. It turns out the ball entered from the outside, not the inside, and Thomas didn’t argue the call.

“The net wasn’t hooked down; she kicked it really hard and it went through the net,” Slaughter said. “They’re like ‘it’s in’ and I said ‘no, it’s not; it hit the wheel.'”

Senior night didn’t turn out right for the Falcons under the lights on Tuesday.

“It was a very emotional day. It was unfortunate; we just couldn’t put one in the back of the net,” Clearfield coach Kam Nordfors said. “This one is going to sting a little bit, but we’ll move on … we have Bonneville on Thursday.”

West Field plays Box Elder on Thursday, so there can still be more shuffling in the standings by week’s end.

“We knew coming into this week that we needed to win both of our games, and that’s what we’re going to try and do,” Slaughter said.

Starting at $4.32/week.
