OGDEN — Ogden High opened its doors in 1892 and moved to its Harrison Boulevard location in 1937. In Utah, girls softball became a sanctioned high school sport in 1990.
Thursday, a talented 2026 Ogden softball team recorded its seventh win — to their knowledge, setting a new mark as the program’s second-most wins in one season.
Unable to find records prior to 1998, this squad is rivaled only by the 2012 Tigers who, according to the Deseret News, went 10-9.
The Tigers set the mark by run-ruling rival Ben Lomond 19-2 in a Region 12 rout.
“It’s an awesome credit to our seniors,” Ogden coach Brogan Poll said. “A lot of these girls have played three or four years now, building to this point to improve themselves as a team; it’s been good.”
Ogden (7-9, 3-2 Region 12) scored seven runs in the top of the first inning, putting its rival back on its heels from the outset.
“We wanted to make sure early on that we got our runs. Any given day, Ben Lomond can play hard and is going to have good energy,” Poll said. “There’s always a competitive spirit. We know we just can’t show up and play them. Something always happens in Ben Lomond and Ogden games.”
Something unusual did happen in the first inning when senior designated hitter Isabella Luedtke had an RBI single to score the first run of the game, then came up again and drove in the seventh run of the frame, as Ogden batted around its lineup.
“It felt really good. I knew I had to do it for my team and I felt like I did well,” Luedtke said. “I wasn’t looking for anything big, just doing what I can and let it happen … playing confident.”
Seven runs took a back seat to a nine-run second inning as Ogden went through its lineup again.
“I don’t think we ever expected easy. It’s a game where we should go out and play like we know how; never stoop down to anyone’s level,” Luedtke said. “We have a good group of girls and got it going.”
Luedtke added a third RBI with a bases-loaded walk in the second inning.
Poll substituted liberally in a third inning when the Tigers plated three more runs.
“Once we knew we had it in control, we slowed the pace of the game and got some of the JV girls some at-bats to make sure they get varsity experience as well,” Poll said. “We got every girl in today. They show up to practice, too.”
Senior Jill Wood pitched the three-inning complete game, striking out four while allowing two hits and both runs in the third.
“We don’t normally start that fast, so it’s nice to be out there and have a little bit of room behind me,” Wood said. “I just throw it across the plate; do my job. My fielders back me up if they hit it and go get it.”
Shortstop Breannah Lamere-Alvarado smacked a two-run triple for both Ben Lomond (1-11, 0-5) runs in the third inning.
Freshman Ben Lomond pitcher Amelya Dominguez was battered for most of Ogden’s assault, allowing 10 hits, walking five and striking out four.
“She was amazing. She got them to hit the ball … we have to make plays behind her. If not, it doesn’t matter what she does in the circle,” Ben Lomond coach Jamie Phippen said. “Continue to teach and hopefully let the girls have some fun.”
Six errors and several passed balls and wild pitches took most of the fun out of Thursday’s game for the Scots.
“Errors come with inexperience, and we’re a young team. A lot of our players have never put a glove on; never thrown a ball,” Phippen said. “We’re trying to have our own little victories every day, whether at practice or games. We’re a rebuilding team, which makes it hard in a tough region.
“You always want to perform well against your rival. We have a lot of respect for Ogden. Give credit where credit is due,” Phippen said.
As for the Tigers, they have a lot of season left to prowl for their best record ever, and to enjoy the ride.
“Ben Lomond is our rival and it’s always a game we try to play our best,” Luedtke said.
