OGDEN — As with learning a musical instrument, the game of golf can be adequately grasped in a couple of years. Then, there’s Farmington High’s Aspen Taylor.
Taylor, who first picked up the game just two years ago, is quickly adding her name to the list of Phoenix golfers to remember following her first solo victory at The Barn Golf Course on Monday as part of Weber High’s Region 1 home tournament.
Farmington, led by Taylor with a team-best 70 strokes through 18 holes, captured first as a team, too, with a team score of 317 on Monday. Syracuse’s Kai Post finished second individually with 73, and Farmington’s Claire Biddulph finished third with 78.
After tying for first last week at Davis Park, Taylor, the younger sister of Farmington alum and Utah Tech golfer Cole Taylor, extended her lead with a two-putt birdie on the 12th hole before finishing her round on No. 14.
“It’s a fun course,” Taylor said. “The greens, there’s a couple tricky spots, but other than that it’s a fun course. … I was playing pretty solid. I had a couple of bogeys, but I got back (and) dropped some really good par saves and found some birdies.”
With two more stops before the region finals, Taylor and the Phoenix looked poised for a deep run with five different top-10 finishes on Monday and five more last week.
Aside from Braxton Watts in 2019, no other Farmington golfer has produced a state title since the school first opened its doors in 2018.
In her seventh season as head coach of the girls’ program, Stephanie Belnap, a BYU alum and recipient of the 2025 UGA Senior Women’s Player of the Year award, has won the trust of Taylor, who’s in just her second season of high school golf.
“She has the best talks on the course,” Taylor said of Belnap. “She’s always keeping me positive, and I think that even when I’m down, she just always knows what to say, and it’s like she’s just one of my good friends now, too.”
In her state debut last year, Taylor tied for 10th across the entire 6A field at MeadowBrook Golf Course in Salt Lake City. Finishing inside the top five last year at the region finals, she’ll get another crack at her first-ever region title at The Barn (May 4) and Lakeside (May 7) in West Bountiful.
