OGDEN — In four years of prep lacrosse, Fremont High’s Kate Jenkins made a point of playing all four positions on the field.
The BYU signee is 11 games into her final season with the Silverwolves — fresh off claiming a two-game lead in Region 5 with a 23-3 home win over Clearfield on Wednesday night — and she’s loving every part of it.
Jenkins, one of five seniors on Fremont’s active roster, is the captain of a veteran corps guiding the program toward a third region title and a sixth consecutive winning season for coach Seth Jones.
Wednesday’s win was a big step, too, as the Falcons (8-4, 4-2 Region 5) entered the contest one game back and hoping to cast their name into the region race with Fremont (9-2, 6-0) by ending what was a seven-game win streak for the Silverwolves.
“It feels really natural with all the girls,” said Jenkins, who found the goal five times on Wednesday. “I feel like we’re really creative. A lot of us play summer ball together, and even just playing four years helps. … We’ve focused on building off one another and just playing together so that we all get a good senior year.”
Jenkins, senior attacker Brylee Jeppsen (five goals), junior midfielder Makenzi Overdiek (four goals), and senior midfielder Bailey Sargent (four) led the charge up top. Overdiek and Sargent tallied four assists apiece.
After Wednesday, Sargent and Jenkin led the team with 30 goals apiece, which ranks 43rd in Utah for each.
“It’s really good to have one person, at least, that you can point to some good chemistry,” Jenkins said. “You know what they’re going to do, you know what you’re going to do, and I think that she’s one that we work really well together.”
Fremont, anchored by junior defender Clara McCormick along the back line and junior Greeley Kelley in goal, held Clearfield’s attack to just two shots on goal in the first half. Up 15-2 to begin the second half, Fremont relinquished just one more goal to Clearfield via Jenika Wagstaff.
After a slow start at Northridge last week, Jones sat his team down before Wednesday’s home matchup to set the record straight.
“We struggled in our last game against Northridge; the girls didn’t come out ready to play,” Jones said. “We told them today, ‘You come out to play, because they’re No. 2, they’re coming to beat us, and if you don’t show up, it might go south.”
Defensively, Fremont has looked like a serious contender as of late.
The Silverwolves have allowed a total of seven goals through their last four region dates, and haven’t allowed an opponent more than 11 this season; Fremont narrowly defeated Herriman 13-11 in that contest.
A key pillar of that success is just how well-versed Fremont has become at understanding all three levels of the field, Jones said. McCormick, one of his key pieces in the back, has eight goals this season, including one Wednesday.
“People just can’t get by her,” Jones said of McCormick. “She’s a phenomenal defender, but she’s also a great attacker. So we only played her a little bit on defense today, even though she’s our anchor.
“They just get along, and that’s the key. You can have great individual players, but if you can’t get together and play — I mean, we run some crazy plays that can only happen with chemistry. If you’re not able to read that girl, you’re not going to make that play happen.”
It’s a team chock-full of experience but the secret, Jones said, is giving his girls the slack needed to play worry-free lacrosse with the depth earned from last year’s 9-8 finish that couldn’t repeat the 6A state championship run from 2024.
A finale with Park City is on Jones’ wish list.
“We only have a few girls who know what it’s like to go to a final from 2000 through 2024,” Jones said. “They’re hungry, and they wanna get back at it.
With six games to go, including four on the road, Fremont’s in for quite the ride as the program chases down its first region title since last sticking a state title in its briefcase two years ago. The Silverwolves close the season at none other than Cleafield, too, for the regular-season finale.
On Friday, Fremont hosts West Field with a 5:30 p.m. faceoff.
