PLEASANT VIEW — Even after a win, the Davis High boys volleyball team takes to the court to identify and correct the little things.

Yes, even after a 3-0 shutout victory at Weber High on Thursday afternoon, the Darts shook hands and regrouped to review and attack the elements of their game that left them dissatisfied.

Davis senior Chase Finlinson produced consecutive kills in the closing sequence of their third set to defeat the Warriors (25-20, 26-24, 26-24) in short order, but he’s a firm believer in the attention to detail that’s powered the Darts through five straight wins since March 19 at Farmington.

“At the end, we’ve been clutching more and that’s something we’ve worked on,” Finlinson said. “I’m excited. I think we can win region here (and) so I’m excited for these last games. I think we’ve got it.”

Pointing to fellow seniors Jack Bennett and Jacob Downs, two of his longtime teammates since first swapping out soccer for volleyball in 2023, Finlinson knows he can’t get the job done without them.

Downs, serving late into the first round, ushered in the first set for Davis (12-8, 5-1 Region 1) by five as Weber (9-9, 2-3) pinned itself to the net for the remainder of the match.

In the second set, Davis senior Britton Egbert teamed up with sophomore Abe Clark for a 3-0 rally to go up two sets. In the third, Bridger Smith’s late stand for Weber, which included two late blocks for a 24-all contest, fell through through the floor and the Darts slipped out the door via Finlinson’s serving.

“I think it’s a little more urgent just because we know we need to win,” Finlinson said.

First-year coach Dalton Kohl, who stepped into the head coaching role following stints as an assistant at Davis and Northridge, has watched a handful of high school squads in his time and feels this particular squad has a chance to make some noise.

“I think getting in high-pressure situations early on in your season lends itself to your ability to win in the tournament,” Kohl said. “That’s what we try to do; we pack our schedule with good teams.”

Davis, with three regular-season games to go and just two left on the region slate, is chasing consecutive region titles in the third year of sanctioned boys volleyball.

The Darts are senior-heavy, yes, but it’s part of why so many underclassmen are getting valuable reps this spring, Kohl said.

“I think we had a slow start to our preseason, but we’ve made some real progress,” Kohl said. “Our senior class is huge. We’ve looked to them for leadership, to be aggressive at the service line, get us a lot of blocks and our two outsides (Jack Bennett and Jacob Downs) are seniors.

“(Seniors) are the backbone of our team.”

Davis travels to Lone Peak on Tuesday, April 21, before closing its region schedule at Syracuse on Thursday, April 23, and at home against Layton on Tuesday, April 28.
