WASHINGTON TERRACE — With 3 minutes left, Cayden Fullerton hit a game-sealing goal that the Roy High boys soccer team had waited on for a while.
Late in a scoreless contest, Bonneville senior defender Jordan Uidtenbogaard fouled Royals senior forward Corbin Socwell, who’d leave the match briefly in the closing minutes of Tuesday’s 1-0 road win over the Lakers. That transgression placed Fullerton before a golden penalty kick opportunity that Roy’s senior captain wasn’t about to leave on the table.
Fullerton, firing left of Bonneville senior goalkeeper Daxton Chapple, joined a restless Royals squad in the northwest corner of the field to celebrate the fortuitous goal. Minutes later, Isaac Davis, a sophomore, cleared one final Laker look for Roy’s first road win of the season.
“We’re just fighting,” David Bischoff, Roy’s first-year head coach, said. “We’re trying to just get into the playoffs at this point and we need to win a couple of games here at the end. This was a big step for us, but, honestly, this one, (Clearfield) and (Fremont) are ones I think we can get.”
It’s been 26 days since Roy (3-11, 3-6 Region 5) last tasted victory after five consecutive losses — three of which were shutouts at the hands of Layton Christian, Northridge and Box Elder.
The Lakers (5-9, 3-6) missed on two goals at the beginning and end of the first half.
Bonneville first thought it appeared on the scoreboard via sophomore striker Ryker Brooks, who watched his goal removed due to an offside penalty. Later, with 10 seconds left in the opening half, the game clock beat out junior defender Ryder Stratford’s seemingly successful touch inside a busy box entering halftime.
To finish, Fullerton said, gives Roy’s senior captain hope about what his team — picking up its first road victory of the regular season — can potentially achieve down the stretch.
“We can definitely prove that we’re better than most of these teams,” Fullerton said. “It’s not a talent thing, it’s just an effort thing. That’s all it is.”
The celebration, though, was cut short due to an altercation between the Bonneville staff and a Roy parent following the end of regulation. The issue, according to multiple witnesses, stemmed from a late red card issued to a Roy player with 18 seconds left in the match.
The card, along with the yellow that set up Roy’s decisive goal, was the second to fall inside the final few minutes of the match. The UHSAA’s official rules state that red cards, as in this case, which included abusive language from a player, may result in a suspension of up to three games.
Neither Bonneville nor Roy publicly addressed the incident but coaches Bischoff and second-year Bonneville head coach Brady Nicholls expressed their disappointment in the lack of sportsmanship before and after Tuesday’s match.
“I think no matter who it is, whatever side, you’re going to feel like you were wronged when it comes to a penalty kick,” Nicholls said. “That’s the good and the bad with soccer. It’s such a judgment call, and there’s judgment calls all over the field. …
“I think now we’ll determine how we react to it. We can either come out and let that goal decide our season, or we can just keep battling back and let it make us angry and give us some motivation to keep going.”
The remainder of Roy’s season, Bischoff said, begins with leadership, including that of Fullerton, who scored Tuesday’s decisive goal.
“We need encouragement from our captains,” Bischoff said. “Across the board, everybody just needs to stick together. It’s hard when you lose multiple games in a row, and it’s really hard to keep your team together. That’s been the biggest thing throughout the whole year. The kids have been good, they practice hard, they’re staying together, (and) they’re staying positive.”
“I think there was just more passion from us,” Fullerton said. “I think every time we play Bonneville, it’s a very intense game and we just wanted it more than they did.”
The Royals, now with their first road win of the campaign, return home for their home finale against West Field at 7 p.m. Thursday. They’ll travel to Clearfield (April 28) and Fremont (May 5) to round out the season.
Bonneville has three matches to go: Thursday at Northridge, April 30 at Northridge and May 5 at home against Clearfield.
