MORGAN — The region boys volleyball series between Morgan and Ogden High has become the bar for both squads in recent seasons. It’s not the Senior Night match Trojans coach Kyle Komenda would’ve preferred, but the defending 3A state champs showed out all the same.
Seven seniors, including captains Kevin Wangsgard and Joshua DeMond, lifted Morgan with 24 digs on Thursday, and freshman Ben Komenda, brother of Morgan graduate and 2025 state champion Jack Komenda, dealt the final blow to Ogden in set No. 5.
Down 2-1 through the first three sets, the Trojans claimed the match in back-to-back sets (23-25, 27-25, 21-25, 25-18, 15-9) by tallying 47 team blocks and 45 kills to even up the 3A North region race.
Wangsgard led the team with 15 kills, and junior libero Caleb Stephens tallied 22 digs.
“Every time we play Ogden, we’re motivated,” Kyle Komenda said. “They’re a great team and, I think more than anything, (we) were motivated because the last time we played them, we looked horrible. I think we had 20 hitting errors or something like 12 or 15 service errors. We kind of dug our own grave, and (we) were anxious to show (Ogden) and show each other.”

Morgan (12-9, 6-1 Region 1) recorded 20 service errors on Thursday, but Ogden (12-6, 6-1), too, was especially challenged from the floor with 37 total errors in the loss.
Senior outside hitter Keen Crowther led Ogden with 19 kills. His younger brother, sophomore outside hitter Kos Crowther, added another 14 for the Tigers. Freshman James Taukiuvea led the team with 19 assists.
With the two teams now knotted at the top of the standings, Ogden’s region title hopes are still well within reach. With just two home games left — a nonregion bout with Syracuse on Friday, and senior night against Logan on Tuesday, April 28 — the Tigers are still playing for a lot after their first region loss of the season, Ogden coach Tim Wright explained on Thursday.
“That’s always hard, but we talk a lot about that,” Wright said of his team’s headspace. “It doesn’t matter who’s on the other side of the court. You have to play how you know how to play, right? And, so, during these next few weeks, that’s going to be our big focus.
“Morgan might be on our side, we might not see them until the championship, we might see them before. But whenever we do, it doesn’t matter because we’re going to make sure we play our game.”
Ogden claimed its first region title last season, and, with a win next week, would secure at least a share of the 2026 title. Morgan, too, can claim a piece of the prize after its upcoming nonregion tournament on Friday; the Trojans close the region schedule at Grantsville next Tuesday.
