Prep notebook: Herzog, Luna finish top 5 at Northern Utah golf Invite

(Photo supplied, Broc Ballif/West Field High School)The prep boys golf season teed off Monday for the Northern Utah Invitational at Eagle Mountain Golf Course in Brigham City, and a handful of local names shot in the Top 10.
West Field junior Mack Herzog, with birdies on the eighth and 11th holes, tied Ridgeline’s Dallin Anderson with 68 on the afternoon. Ridgeline’s Beckham Skinner won the individual title with 67.
West Field, powered by Herzog as the runner-up, and by senior Ethan Luna in fourth with a score of 69, tied Weber High for second overall. Weber senior Austin Bybee placed fourth individually with a 70, while fellow Warrior senior Barrett Hulsenberg finished eighth individually with 72, including three birdies on the back 9 and a putt for par on the 18th hole.
Layton sophomore Mason Wright tied Box Elder sophomore Cohen Jeppsen and Skyridge’s Tanner Porter for 10th individually with 73.
Layton finished fifth overall, and a single stroke ahead of Box Elder in sixth.

Weber High boys basketball meeting set
Newly hired Weber Warriors boys basketball coach Payton Dastrup is meeting with interested players and their families early next month before his first official season as head coach.
On Sept. 1, Dastrup invites “anyone interested in trying out for the boys basketball team” to join him in the high school’s media center from 7-8:30 p.m. for a meeting covering the team’s workout schedules, fall scrimmages, tryout dates and more ahead of the 2025-26 regular season.
Weber tapped Dastrup in the spring when former coach Landon Cosby leapt toward the opening at Fremont. The Mesa, Arizona, native starred for BYU and Oregon State during his college days and previously served as the head coach at 4A Stansbury High in Stansbury Park.
Football scrimmages this week
High school football season inches closer every day, and this week brings the first taste of action with a handful of Northern Utah home scrimmages as teams enter the final week of preparation before Week 1 kicks off.
