OUTLOOK

It’s been a tough handful of years for the Bears, but a coaching change brought in one of the area’s most experienced names, Craig Anhder, to replace Trampis Waite (14-32 at BR), now at Nampa High School in Idaho after four losing seasons in Garland. Region 11 is no easy task, though, and it’s not an overnight process building a contender the likes of Ridgeline or Stansbury, which each shut out the Bears by 35 or more a year ago. Anhder built the Green Canyon program from scratch upon opening in 2017, and went 90-46 in 12 seasons at Sky View from 2005 to his departure in 2016. Bear River is his latest project, and it’ll begin with a quarterback search after an injury derailed Jaxson Theurer’s senior season. Senior wideout Eli Braegger (702 yards, 6 TDs) lends the Bears a weapon and senior center Delyn Groom is also set to return. Brecken Garn, Quaid Murray and Dallen Rice are gone, though. Senior defensive end Brady Payne and cornerback Glaiden Behrens (559 receiving yards) return the most experience to Jared Lish’s defense. While a tough region doesn’t do Bear River any favors, the nonregion slate includes two early opportunities at 3A Ogden and Thunder Ridge (Idaho) at home in Week 3.
