Conner Yerka (Layton) is declared the winner over Michael Bennett (Weber) during a Region 1 wrestling dual on Thursday, Jan. 8, 2026, in Pleasant View.

The Utah high school state wrestling championships kick off Wednesday with the 3A boys and girls brackets at Snow College South in Richfield.

STORYLINES TO WATCH

LAYTON SIGNEES CHASING HISTORY

Layton High seniors Noah Bull (150), Elijah Hawes (190), Austin Paris (157), and Gavin Regis (165) – all signed with Division I wrestling programs – are leading the charge for a potential fourth consecutive team title at state next week.

Those five are a match shy of 200 combined wins this season, including 40-plus individual wins by Bosh, Hawes and Regis. Paris is chasing his fourth state title and first as a Lancer.

THOMPSON, HALES LEAD DEEP BOX ELDER

Box Elder will, once again, field a deep boys and girls program at the state tournament next week.

Kamon Thompson (150), entering the field with a 44-7 record, and Maycee Hales (235), defending her unblemished 33-0 junior season, are leading 21 total state-qualifying Bees into Orem.

Box Elder’s seniors include Adrian Gamino, Denver Ellis, Masen Hancey, Parker Whetton, Helayna Smalt, Elyse Ostler, MiCayla Christensen, Grace Christoffersen, Amber Murray, Hailey Fisher and Kennady Wood.

B-VILLE’S HENDRICKS MAKES HER RETURN

Bonneville High senior Corrine Hendricks (105) is returning to state for the second time.

Hendricks, with a 22-7 record at 105 pounds, returns to Orem following a 1-2 finish last year. She’ll do so alongside sophomore and first-time qualifier, Kaliha Hodgson (135), making her state debut in Orem next week.

LAST TRIP FOR ROY SENIORS

Four Roy High seniors and top-10 5A wrestlers – Kaleb Blackner (126), Maximo Quintana (138), Carter Riley (285), and Kaden Herrera (132) – are making their final state trip together to Orem next week. Blackner is committed to Doane University for wrestling.

Junior and two-time qualifier Ken Starr (120) will also join the Royals in rounding out the boys’ state roster.

On the girls’ end, Roy freshman Avery Colvin leads her team with a 33-3 record at 135 pounds and a first-place finish at divisionals earlier this year. Three juniors – Abbie Colvin (130), Maya Figueroa (140) and Kaydance Price (155) – are returning to state following three top-3 finishes at divisional.

MORGAN LOT HEADS TO RICHFIELD

More than 25 Morgan wrestlers are bound for Richfield this week, including boys senior Chase Allen (175), with a 40-6 season record, and girls junior Callie Toone (130), entering the bracket with a 22-8 record and 95% bonus win rate this season.

The Trojan boys’ state team has 458 combined wins this season. Toone and Adi Clark (120) are holding down the fort on the girls’ end with 45 combined wins on the season.

SEVEN SCOTS MAKE THE CUT

Seven Ben Lomond senior wrestlers, including four seniors, are headed to Snow College for the opening round of 3A action on Wednesday in Richfield.

Ryan Church (120), Ivan Pina (157) and Daniel Salazar (175) have 22 combined wins between them this season. On the girls end, Layla Zarkou (115) comes in at 1-9.

OGDEN’S WARDELL MAKES STATE DEBUT

Ogden High junior Ethan Wardell (165), a first-year wrestler for Juan Martinez’s crew, is one of just two boys state qualifiers making the trip to Snow this week. Wardell and Parker Morris (132) represent the Tigers on the boys side of 3A.

Wardell and Morris carry 23 combined wins on the season.

On the girls’ end, Cailyn Knighton (125), Lily Lowry (135), and Aubriana Zarate (235) enter the 3A girls field with 31 combined wins on the season; Knighton, with 51 career wins, is looking to finish her sophomore season above .500.
