LAYTON — The “senior night” concept is perhaps the best tradition in high school sports.
There’s a pageantry to it: Seniors line the floor with their proud, smiling parents; iPhone flash illuminates the stands and uncles do that high-pitch whistling thing with their middle and index fingers. It’s a level of euphoria not sold over the counter, and, as is often the case for most prep athletes, it’s one of the last times they’ll wear a uniform.
Layton High boys basketball followed such a pregame tone with a 27-point win over Weber High on Tuesday night in honor of its six seniors.
Chase Randall, one of those six senior Lancers, dropped a team-high 18 points, including two first-quarter triples, as part of a 24-4 start. Layton (15-6, 5-1 Region 1) increased its lead to 22 before halftime and never looked back to defeat Weber (7-14, 0-6).
Randall, who watched his older brother and former Lancer guard, Jacob Randall, walk the same walk during a shortened 2020 season, said the moment, and the game itself, were surreal.
“It’s what you dream about growing up,” Randall said. “Seeing my brother come through this school, just seeing what he got to do on senior night, it’s a cool experience.”
Seniors Tage Allen (12 points), Nic Anderson (five points), Baylor Brant (five points), and Brady Wilken (three points) rounded out Layton’s starting five. Senior Jack Godderidge added 13 points, junior Karter Miller managed 12 and junior Isaac Thompson pitched in five.
Layton, cooling off for nearly four scoreless minutes of basketball, still managed to outscore the Beau Potokar-led Warriors 11-9 — Brant fit his lone triple in during this stretch — for a 35-13 lead at the half. Potokar (19 points) managed just one, short-range field goal in the first half but would unload 17 points in the second half, including a game-high five triples.
Potokar, senior Derik Bowden (15 points), junior Alec Maynard (eight points), sophomore Creed Devries (three points) and senior Jake Thomas (three points) rounded out the Weber scoring.
Potokar has been a bright spot for a Weber program down a key man in Thomas Packer, missing Tuesday’s game due to injury, and searching for any and all answers with two games to go. His coach, Landon Cosby, saved some praise for his role amid a season full of challenges.
“I thought Beau stepped up tonight,” Cosby said. “He shows up, he’s low-maintenance, he can always shoot the ball, but he’s putting more effort into getting better defensively, so he’s not just a shooter. He’s starting to round his game out some more, but he’s a high-character kid and a great kid to have around (Weber).”
Randall, dropping eight points in the opening half, housed 10 more in the third quarter, and Godderidge painted his third 3-point bucket for a 55-28 lead with eight minutes left.
Miller benefited from two Weber fouls — an intentional foul on Devries and a technical called against junior Carson Hill — but the Warriors, led by Potokar’s 11 fourth-quarter points, ultimately matched Layton with 20 points in the final frame.
Tuesday’s win brings things one step closer to pitting Layton and Davis, the two Region 1 frontrunners at 5-1, against one another in a de facto region title next Tuesday, Feb. 10, in Layton.
Friday, Layton travels to Farmington while Davis contests a nonregion home matchup with Timpanogos.
With one home game left, Layton is 7-1 at home this season (the only loss coming 70-58 against American Fork last week) and will be searching for No. 8 against Davis.
“We don’t lose on this floor,” Allen said. “When I’m gone, I hope we’re still keeping that up.”
As for Cosby and Weber, they’ll host Syracuse on Friday for their home finale before reporting to Farmington for their regular-season finale the following Friday, Feb. 13.
“They haven’t cashed it in yet even though our record isn’t great,” Cosby said. “We still got some games left to go, but I credit our guys for continuing to battle every day.”
DAVIS 67, FARMINGTON 63
KAYSVILLE — Davis led 43-27 at the half and held off a spirited Farmington (18-9, 2-3 Region 1) comeback bid for a region win.
Bode Sparrow scored a game-high 24 points for Davis (14-6, 5-1 Region 1). JT Turley tallied 16 points and six assists. Tradon Bessinger added 15 points and seven rebounds.
Justin B. Johnson contributed to score reports.
