LAYTON — On Layton High girls basketball senior night, it was serendipitous that senior captains Bryndee Kozisek and Hadley Collier shone in the spotlight on center stage Tuesday.

Kozisek and Collier combined for 25 points as Layton held off several second-half Weber runs, saving a 49-42 upset victory and splitting the Region 1 season series.

It was not only the points, but how and when they scored them at crucial moments that made it a memorable night.

Kozisek led the floor with 13 points for Layton (6-12, 1-5 Region 1), on a variety of shots from all over the court, including seven quick points in the first half when she wore out the paint.

“Last game I was shooting a lot of outside shots that weren’t dropping, so today I tried to attack more and take what the defense gives me; be unselfish,” Kozisek said. “I wanted to start fast; it’s always good to get a first bucket, get your confidence going.”

Her floater in the lane on Layton’s opening possession jump-started a 14-7, first-quarter lead that expanded to 26-15 at the break.

“We could have started off slow by not getting as long of a warmup, because we were doing all of that senior stuff, but we had energy and came ready to play,” Collier said. “We did great moving the ball around to get open shots and knocked them down.”

Collier scored 12 points for the Lancers, including 6 of 9 from the free throw line, despite being saddled with foul trouble for much of the second half.

“It was frustrating; I’d like to be in the game, but I tried to cheer my team on and make a difference from the bench,” Collier said.

Weber (12-8, 3-3) was down but not out, rallying with a 10-0 run in the third quarter and closing the gap to 31-27 at the 2:42 mark on a 3-pointer by junior guard Jade Kulpa.

“Eleven points isn’t anything they couldn’t come back from. We had to keep making our shots like we did in the first half to stay in the lead,” Collier said.

Just when it appeared the Warriors had Layton on the ropes, junior forward Hana Lee tossed in an amazing hook shot off the glass, while Kozisek found her range from beyond the arc and added a pair of free throws, and suddenly it was back to 11 at 38-27.

“I always tell the girls it’s a game of runs; if they go on a run, stay calm, cool and collected,” Kozisek said. “We needed a momentum shift, so I went in and made a play.”

The Warriors scored 14 points in the third period, nearly doubling their first-half numbers, but missed a layup that could have cut the margin to two prior to the Layton counter.

“We talked about being more aggressive to the rim. We didn’t move the ball very well in the first half … one pass and one shot,” Weber coach Trevor Howell said. “We cut it to four, then they go three possessions in a row and it’s back to double digits just like that.”

Still, Weber wasn’t through, and after Layton sophomore forward Kenley Bennie made two free throws early in the final frame, the Warriors again punched back with an 8-0 spurt, narrowing the deficit to 40-37 on a basket from the left angle by sophomore guard Summer Hallows with a little more than two minutes remaining.

But Collier returned from her exile on the bench, splashing 3 of 4 free throws in the last 22 seconds, keeping the Warriors away.

“We work hard on free throws every day at practice; it’s just muscle memory,” Collier said. “You’ve got to step up and hit them; do it for your team.”

Weber was paced by Kulpa and senior center Rylee Jugler who checked in with 11 points each.

“They hit some shots; we had some defensive breakdowns and left some shooters open that really hurt us, and we couldn’t get any closer,” Howell lamented.

In the end, with all of the distractions of senior night, Layton remained focused and pulled out the win after losing in January at Weber.

“It was such a special night. With that pressure of having it be senior night, I tried to have fun and play for my team,” Kozisek said.

Collier was also pleased with her team’s effort, noting: “We’ve been putting in a lot of work and we knew this was a game we could win, so we came out and hustled and did it.”
