OGDEN — Ogden High’s Tayson Porter loves playing basketball and, more importantly, he loves the guys out there on the floor with him.

Porter, the son of Ogden coach Trent Porter and one of five Tiger seniors recognized ahead of a 78-54 win over Ben Lomond on Tuesday, has a warm feeling about his team’s postseason odds following an eighth consecutive win over the Scots in the annual hardwood series.

Ogden (14-8, 5-4 Region 12), flying out the door after a nine-point halftime lead, scored in the upper 70s against the Scots (2-20, 0-9) for the second time this season.

“Just playing with each other so much, we’ve built this kind of chemistry that’s really rare to find,” said Tayson Porter after scoring 12 points, including two triples.

Fellow senior Jackson Maw led Ogden, and the floor, with 21 points on 8-of-11 free-throw shooting. Those free throws played a big role in the first half when Ben Lomond senior Cole Parkinson (17 points) kept his team within reach from behind the arc with three of his four total 3-point buckets.

Junior Blake Weston added 11 points for Ogden. Junior Ryan Kirkland and senior Peter Archibald each finished with 10 points. Senior Briggs Galbraith dropped eight points and junior Anderson Curry chipped in three.

“They’re all my best friends,” Maw said. “I’ve played with Briggs my whole life; Peter, I brought to Ogden (and) I just love playing with them.”

Parkinson and senior Taggart Bush (20 points) helped the Scots overturn a 10-0 Ogden start for a 12-all contest late in the first quarter. Junior Anthony Herrera (five points) notched his only bucket from the floor at the first-quarter buzzer to maintain a one-possession game.

Archibald, Galbraith and Curry poured in second-quarter triples, and Maw rose to nine points before the end of the second quarter, but BL cut a double-digit Ogden lead back down to nine before the break.

But the cracks within Ben Lomond’s encouraging start slowly emerged in the third quarter, and the loss of sophomore center Cade Curtis, drawing his fifth and final foul down 15 with 2:09 left in the frame, took a strong body away from the Scots inside.

“We competed with everything we had,” BL coach Lyndon Johnson said. “That’s a good (Ogden) team. I thought, for the most part, we did about all we could with them.

“They haven’t quit, we haven’t had anyone quit the team, we haven’t had guys not practice (or) not go to class. They’re doing all the things we’re supposed to do. It’s just going to take more time than we want it to, but we’ll get it. We’re going to stay with it.”

Ogden outscored BL 22-13 in the fourth quarter, featuring back-to-back jams by Kirkland and Maw inside the final minutes.

The Tigers have dominated the series as of late; BL is four seasons removed from its last win against Ogden.

Up next on Friday, Ogden travels to region frontrunner Morgan to finish the season while BL hosts Logan. Both games are slated for a 7 p.m. tipoff.
