PLEASANT VIEW — Two losses put Syracuse High girls basketball’s region ambitions on the rocks, but back-to-back wins at Layton last week and Weber High on Friday have Braden Hamblin and the Titans in about as good a situation as they could ask for.

Weber, and a nonregion loss to Lone Peak, were the only blemishes on an otherwise strong January of basketball for Syracuse. Senior guard Maylee Anderson and the Titans righted one of those wrongs with a 64-30 romp on the Warriors’ home floor Friday night.

Anderson, now up to 1,027 career points at Syracuse (15-5, 5-1 Region 1) following her latest output of 13 points to begin the weekend, triggered an 18-3 start at Weber (12-9, 2-5) in what’d become a running-clock contest late into the third quarter.

“Knowing we only have a couple left, it makes it so there’s no regrets,” Anderson said.

Anderson and Syracuse’s six other seniors are playing for a second consecutive region title after snapping a region-drought of 13 years last season. The Titans host Farmington on senior night, on Tuesday, Feb. 10, before traveling to Davis, another region contender at 5-1, to finish the regular season on Friday, Feb. 13, in Kaysville.

Coming off a bye, Syracuse unloaded on Weber with nine total scorers on Friday. Anderson grouped her game-high 13 points entirely in the first half; Avery King (six points) and Brighton Goddard (three points) poured it on behind the arc with one more first-half 3s.

Olivia Sorenson chalked up eight of her 10 total points in the first half, as Cuse entered the locker room up 23 and never let its foot off the gas. Jasmine Burnett finished with nine points. Karsyn Visser and Mindy McNeil each netted seven. Rachel McBride finished with six points and Zaydie Peterson chipped in three points behind the arc to open the second half.

“I felt like it was a locked-in focus this week,” Hamblin said. “We got to rest and prepare. This (Weber) team beat us the first time around, and we felt like that was not us. We felt like we didn’t play up to our standard and I challenged the girls all week to go out and send a little message.”

Jade Kulpa (six points) and Rylee Jugler (five points) led Weber — playing without a key piece in sophomore forward Bradey Schiffman (injury) — from the field through four forgettable frames. After drawing just 17 points in the first half, the Warriors opened the third quarter with 4:30 of scoreless basketball.

Summer Hallows and Katelyn Arbon finished with four points for Weber. Abigail Hall, Payton Rich and Payton Huff each chipped in three; Avery Shupe finished with two points at the free-throw line.

The last time around, Weber, shooting 46% as a team, gutted out a 66-63 win at Syracuse behind 26 points by Kulpa on the road. Those same looks were just too far and few between from the jump in Friday’s rematch, Warrior coach Trevor Howell said.

“We were scrambled and didn’t rotate properly, and they got it going,” Howell said. “(Syracuse) did a great job shooting the ball and taking advantage of those opportunities. It’s tough when you get down by a lot that quick, and you try to stay together.”

Friday’s win is just third time Syracuse has held an opponent to 30 or fewer points this season, and the first time as part of the region schedule. Drawing the line defensively, Syracuse is hard at work installing a new scheme on that end of the floor late in the season, Anderson said.

It’s a dicey change this late in the year, but one that comes with immense trust in their coach of eight years, 137 wins and nearly four full seasons with this latest senior class.

“(Hamblin)’s been with us through the whole ride,” Anderson said. “I remember going to open gyms when I was younger (and) he definitely brings a big aspect of our team and keeps us hyped to make sure we’re in line and winning games.”

Next week, Syracuse brings its regular season to a close with a chance to claim the region outright either with a Davis loss before Friday, or one last win on the road to end the year.

Hamblin knows, regardless of the scenario, that Syracuse’s business hardly ends with another region title. It ends in Salt Lake City.

“I’d like to think that it’s not an overwhelming thing,” Hamblin said. “It’s supposed to be a celebration (and) honoring our seniors and all the time and dedication they’ve given. But, yeah, this late in the game, when we have a chance to win the region championship, I’d hope all the girls are laser-focused on the task at hand and being able to take care of business.”
