Roy High's Kaleb Blackner is named the 126-pound champion during the 5A state wrestling championships on Friday, Feb. 13, 2026, at the UCCU Center at Utah Valley University in Orem.

OREM — The Box Elder wrestling program secured a second consecutive state runner-up finish on the final day of action at the 5A state championships Friday at the UCCU Center at Utah Valley University.

Led by individual boys champions Kolvin Thompson and Kamon Thompson, the Bees tallied 10 medalists (including six finishing fifth or better) to finish just 10.5 points south of Wasatch, the 5A champion at 200.5 total team points.

West Field (85.5), led by 132-pound champion Daniel Knudsen, finished seventh overall, and Roy (73.5), led by 126-pound champion Kaleb Blackner, finished ninth.

Northridge (43) finished 14th, Fremont (29) landed 17th, and Clearfield (19) wrapped at 21st.

On the girls side, Box Elder (140.5) finished fourth overall with one individual champion, 235-pound titleist Maycee Hales, in addition to four more top-five medalists. Clearfield, led by 155-pound state runner-up Daisy Fackrell, finished 10th with 63.5 team points.

Roy freshman Avery Colvin (135 pounds) secured the only other girls title for area 5A teams, and just the second by a Royal at the 5A tournament this week, with a victory in her first-ever state title bout. Roy (54.5) finished 12th overall, followed by West Field in 13th (48), Fremont (43.5) in 15th, and Bonneville (20) in 25th.

Blackner wraps career with first state title

The state title is stressful enough, but try knowing the guy on the other end of the mat.

Roy High senior Kaleb Blackner and his 126-pound title opponent, Skyline’s Seth Hall, are more than familiar with one another from training sessions outside their high school programs. On Friday, Blackner had to prove he was the better of the two — after all, it’s the last time.

Blackner, finishing runner-up in all three state appearances over the course of his prep career, hung an 8-0 victory over Hall, who succumbed to the Royal on a takedown (fall, 2:34) in a match Blackner said he read from top to bottom as he pursued his first-ever title.

“I’m a Greco guy, so I’m always looking for the big moves, and that’s when it counted most,” Blackner said. “It’s been awesome. (Roy) is my family right here. … This year, I took some hard losses and I just knew I had to keep going, and I had to come through. I’ve got to keep believing in myself.”

Blackner finishes his career 240-66 and was 49-13 in his senior campaign.

Box Elder’s Thompson brothers stack individual titles

Box Elder, finishing second overall on the 5A boys side, featured two brotherly titles by way of 144-pound junior Kolvin Thompson and 150-pound freshman Kamon Thompson on Friday in Orem.

Kolvin defeated Wasatch’s Daxton Bonner 5-3 (fall, 3:27) for one title, and Kamon added another roughly five minutes later in a 4-0 handling of Payson’s Kael Theobald (fall, 3:14). The two brothers, with more than a decade of experience between them already as high school wrestlers, have put together something of a “machine-gun mindset” when they hit the mat, the younger Thompson said.

Kolvin finishes his junior campaign 59-16, and Kamon’s first-ever state title and prep debut closes at 33-5.

“It’s really good having my brother in the finals,” Kamon Thompson said. “I’m really happy. We’ve been wrestling 12 years. … (State) isn’t necessarily brand new to me, but I don’t know how to explain it. It’s just the best feeling.”

Roy’s Kolvin sisters tough out 5A finals together

Box Elder's Kamon Thompson is declared the 150-pound champion over Payson's Kael Theobald during the 5A state wrestling championships on Friday, Feb. 13, 2026, at the UCCU Center at Utah Valley University in Orem.

Roy High sister duo Abbie Colvin, a junior, and Avery Colvin, a freshman, battled side-by-side clear down their respective finals Friday night in Orem. Avery scooped her first career state title in the 135-pound championship; Abbie, a three-time state finalist, finished runner-up at 130 pounds.

Wasatch’s Marabelle Brown defeated Abbie Colvin 4-3 on a takedown (fall, 1:46) in the 130-pound title, directly preceding her younger sister’s match in the 135-pound title bout. Avery recalled prepping for her own match while frantically keeping an eye on the match as her sister fought tooth and nail.

“She struck first, and that kind of scared me,” Avery Colvin said. “I didn’t know what happened next, and somehow we were in the second period. I was doing really well on top… (Handfighting) is something I’ve had to get more accustomed to, coming into high school as a freshman. … I had to learn to do it a little bit better, because that’s kinda the style for girls.”

The Colvin sisters, finishing the season with a combined 88-13 record, have wrestled together since an early age, and are halfway through their two seasons of prep wrestling together as Royals.

“It’s a little hard,” Avery Colvin said. “I want to be able to watch her, and I also have to focus on my match. I watched her for a little bit and then went back to preparing for my match. If we were more spaced out, it’d be a little better, so I could’ve watched her (entire match).”
