TAYLOR — Johnny Caine was one happy camper.

Bonneville High’s fifth-year girls basketball coach was the last one, and among the loudest, in the locker room following a 59-51 road win at No. 16 West Field in the opening round of the 5A state tournament Tuesday night.

Down 14 at the half, the Longhorns faltered late despite a career-high 30 points by junior guard Meghan Peterson.

The Lakers (12-12), pulling away late from the foul line, leaned on 17 points from junior Baya Jimenez to advance to the second round at No. 1 Pleasant Grove on Thursday.

West Field, finishing its second-ever season at 11-13 overall, carried two regular-season wins over Bonneville, including one in overtime on the road, heading into Tuesday’s region rematch.

“We’ve been building this thing for a while, and it hasn’t been the easiest road,” Caine said. “It’s been tough, and it’s been a challenge for us, but these girls, they committed to something when they first came into the program. … It just all came together on this night.”

Jimenez and Bonneville senior center Adisyn Stone (nine points) drew enough late-game fouls for a nine-point threshold in the final 30 seconds of Tuesday’s contest. Mere minutes earlier, the home crowd were the loudest ones in the gym.

Peterson, senior center Kylee Mueller (eight points) and sophomore forward Tahila Munoz (nine points) together brought West Field back within five near the two-minute marker; Peterson and Munoz each buried a fourth-quarter triple.

But sure enough, like the 13-4 fervor the Longhorns opened the third quarter with, it didn’t last in the face of a tireless Bonneville defense.

Seniors Kennedee Solomon and Rylee Andreasen combined for four points in rounding out West Field’s scoring.

“Our girls had enough to finish it out and get the win,” Caine said. “(West Field) made some shots and got some confidence — credit to them, that’s what good players do — but all you can do is get out and guard. That’s what we kept telling the girls … the percentages will be what they are. They usually equal out a bit and they did there toward the end of the game.”

West Field, now a second season finished under head coach Rick Stoeckl, knew when it needed to turn on the heat after an otherwise lackluster opening half.

Bonneville caught a rhythm from the jump. Charity McDonald (nine points), senior guard Ema Eskelsen (eight points), and junior wing Brielle Francom (seven points) helped turn a 5-0 start into a 31-17 statement lead at the half.

Mueller, adding half of West Field’s four second-quarter points, managed her team’s only successful attempt from the field through eight minutes.

No, the next 16 minutes didn’t result in the glorious comeback that Andreasen and her fellow senior Longhorns might’ve envisioned amid their second-half comeback, but a refusal to stand down kept Stoeckl’s connected squad on the court on Tuesday night.

“They’re my best friends,” Andreasen said. “I’m grateful I got my last two seasons to play with them. They care for the team, they care for the girls and it really shows. … We knew it’d be a close game, we knew it’d be tight. We played our game, but let up some easy stuff that we shouldn’t.”

Andreasen, committed to Snow College for softball, isn’t quite done with her prep career yet, but her basketball days are. She spoke to just how important Stoeckl has been not just to the team’s three seniors, but to a fledgling basketball program in the second year of its life.

With a loss Tuesday, Stoeckl is 18-31 all-time with the Longhorns.

“Rick cares for all of us,” Andreasen said. “He builds each of us up confidently.”

On the other end of the floor, a surviving Bonneville team prepares for top seed Pleasant Grove, a program that’s rebounded from a nine-win season last year to enter the postseason 22-0 under head coach Angela Villa.

Tipoff for Thursday’s second-round contest is slated for 7 p.m. at Pleasant Grove High School.

CLEARFIELD 66, BRIGHTON 57

CLEARFIELD — On the shoulders of Sophie Nielsen’s 33 points (which included 19 free throws), No. 22 Brighton (5-17) fared much better than its 52-30 loss at Clearfield in the nonregion slate.

But the No. 11 Falcons prevailed all the same, putting away the Bengals 66-57 in the first round of the 5A girls basketball state tournament Tuesday night in Clearfield.

Izzy Wyaskett scored 25 points to lead Clearfield (16-8). Ciara De La O added 16 points on four 3-pointers, and Emiko Kano pitched in eight points.

Clearfield will travel to face No. 6 Wasatch in the second round at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19.
