Prep basketball roundup: Morgan boys, girls advance to 3A semifinals
CEDAR CITY — Morgan High boys basketball turned away each push by No. 8 Canyon View (12-13) and pulled away to continue its 3A state title defense with a 67-43 victory in a quarterfinal game Thursday morning at Southern Utah University.
Canyon View employed a box-and-one on Saunders for much of the game, but his transition and-one early in the fourth made it 48-32 with 7:12 left, and sparked a 24-12 fourth quarter as CV tried a full-court press to no avail. Saunders’ and-one drive capped a 16-4 run after the Falcons cut it to 32-28.
Saunders led No. 1 Morgan (22-3) with 20 points. Mason Williams scored 17 points in the post. Jake Hansen added 12 points.
Morgan gets a region rematch with No. 12 Grantsville in the semifinals after the Cowboys upset No. 4 Emery. Their matchup is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday. Morgan won their two region matchups by an average of 30 points.
RICHFIELD 54, OGDEN 43
CEDAR CITY — No. 7 Ogden never trailed by more than nine until the final seconds but shot 2 of 18 from the 3-point line, ultimately undoing chances to get over the hump against No. 2 Richfield in the 3A quarterfinals at SUU.
Jackson Maw led Ogden (15-10) with 14 points and eight rebounds. Tayson Porter scored 10 points and Peter Archibald, who made both of his team’s 3s, scored eight points.
Maw and Ryan Kirkland (six points) hammered Richfield in the post for an early 10-6 lead but Kirkland picked up three first-quarter fouls and eventually fouled out in the fourth.
Jorgen Southwick led Richfield (17-7) with 23 points.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
MORGAN 62, EMERY 55
CEDAR CITY — No. 6 Morgan only trailed once — Emery took a 34-32 lead at the 5:31 mark of the third quarter — in an upset win over No. 3 Emery in the 3A quarterfinals at Southern Utah University.
Makayla Williams scored six of her 19 points in the first frame to lead Morgan (15-10) to a 12-10 lead after one quarter. and Emery (14-10) used a press to cut Morgan’s lead to a 30-29 halftime score.
Zoe Rockenfeld took over in the second half, scoring 14 of her game-high 21 points after the break. The Trojans built a 47-39 lead after three quarters, only to see Emery score the first six points of the final frame.
Morgan did not convert a field goal in the fourth quarter but shot 15 of 20 from the free-throw line to close the game. Belle Nelson hit two 3-pointers on her way to 10 points for Morgan and Kamry Wardell added six points.
The Trojans will face Region 11 foe and No. 7 seed Grantsville (13-12) in the semifinals at 5:50 p.m. Friday. Morgan split two games with Grantsville this season.
WASATCH 45, CLEARFIELD 42
HEBER CITY — No. 11 Clearfield led 22-21 at the half but could not hold that lead in a narrow loss at No. 6 Wasatch (18-5) in the 5A second round.
Ciara De La O led Clearfield with 14 points on three 3-pointers. Amoree Scholer scored eight points.
The Falcons end the year with a 16-9 record.
