Prep basketball playoff roundup: Morgan, Layton Christian set for girls 3A final

Roy bows out; Morgan boys reach the final day, too

CEDAR CITY — Ava Smith scored a game-high 21 points and No. 5 Layton Christian Academy girls basketball took a 34-12 lead into halftime in a 52-40 win over No. 8 Union (14-10) in the 3A state semifinals Friday at Southern Utah University.

Fabiana Lopez scored 11 points with two 3-pointers for Layton Christian (16-9), including a half-court bank shot at the first-half buzzer. Sara Ledio added seven points. The Eagles advance to their first-ever girls basketball state championship game.

MORGAN 53, GRANTSVILLE 48

CEDAR CITY — No. 6 Morgan trailed 22-19 at the break, then outscored No. 7 Grantsville (13-13) by a 34-26 margin after the break for a 3A state semifinals win at SUU.

Zoe Rockenfeld led Morgan (16-10) with 17 points and three 3-pointers. Makayla Williams tallied 14 points and Mackayla McGiven scored eight points.

The Trojan win sets up an all-Region 11 state championship tilt between Layton Christian and Morgan, set for 5 p.m. Saturday. Morgan swept the two region contests by scores of 47-40 at LCA and 64-59 at home.

BOYS BASKETBALL

MORGAN 67, GRANTSVILLE 41

CEDAR CITY — No. 1 Morgan broke a 12-12 first-quarter tie by outscoring No. 12 Grantsville 38-16 across the second and third quarters in the 3A state semifinals at Southern Utah University.

Brody Peterson led Morgan (23-3) with 16 points on two 3-pointers, three rebounds, three assists and two steals. Bracken Saunders added 15 points and nine rebounds. Jake Hansen tallied 14 points, four assists and two steals.

Mason Williams had seven points, nine rebounds, four assists and five blocks

Cole Sparks scored a game-high 17 points with two 3-pointers for Grantsville (12-13). Morgan swept Grantsville 3-0 by an average margin of 29 points this season.

The Trojans advance to their second consecutive state championship game, facing Region 11 foe No. 3 American Heritage at 7 p.m. Saturday. American Heritage advanced with a come-from-behind, 44-40 win over Richfield; Morgan took home the 2025 trophy with a 47-32 win over Richfield.

SPRINGVILLE 82, ROY 63

SPRINGVILLE — Jesse Jones scored a game-high 23 points with three 3-pointers and five rebounds but it wasn’t enough as No. 10 Roy was outscored in every quarter in a 5A second-round loss at No. 7 Springville (16-7).

Anthony Parker tallied 15 points with two treys for Roy. Boston Greenhalgh added 13 points, three assists and four steals. The Royals end the year with a 19-6 mark.

Jamyn Sondrup led Springville (16-7) with 22 points, converting 11 of his 12 field goal attempts, while grabbing 12 rebounds. The Red Devils made 14 3-pointers.

MTN RIDGE 63, SYRACUSE 52

HERRIMAN — No. 11 Syracuse trailed 18-10 after the first quarter and could not recover in a 6A second-round loss at No. 6 Mountain Ridge (17-7).

Colton Hoenigman led all scorers with 17 points Syracuse (13-10). Skyler Orton added 16 points and Carter Robinson scored 12. The Titans end the season with a 13-10 mark.

DELTA 59, OGDEN 45

CEDAR CITY — No. 7 Ogden and No. 6 Delta played essentially even in the first half, with Ogden leading 16-15 after one quarter and 25-24 after two, but Delta opened the second half on a 12-2 run to take control and beat the Tigers in a 3A consolation game at SUU.

Jackson Maw led Ogden with 14 points, nine rebounds and three assists but fouled out with 2:41 left in the game. Ryan Kirkland tallied 11 points and seven rebounds. Tayson Porter added nine points and six assists while Anderson Curry scored five points.

The Tigers end the season with a 15-11 record.
