Prep notebook: Clearfield honoring Haley Hall Steed Jan. 16 against Box Elder
School to retire No. 33 Jersey of Falcons, BYU star
Clearfield High and BYU basketball great Haley Hall Steed will soon see her No. 33 jersey in the rafters at her high school alma mater.
On Jan. 16, Clearfield will add Hall’s number beside Jackie Beene McBride, Utah’s first female high school All-American, at halftime of the team’s home game against Box Elder. Hall becomes just the second former Falcon to have her number set aside.
The Class 5A MVP in 2006, Hall is Clearfield’s all-time leader in scoring, assists (440, 7th in the state), and steals (405, 9th in the state). Jeff Judkins recruited the four-time All-State selection as a sophomore.
In Provo, three different ACL injuries weighed on Hall’s chances at BYU, but she’d ultimately set the school’s single-season assist record with 254 (7.5 apg) during her sixth and final season in 2012-13. Hall was named WCC First Team All-Conference and conference tournament MVP that same season.
Hall was a two-time Nancy Lieberman Award finalist at BYU.
Roy produces pair of baseball, softball commits
Roy senior Parker Skidmore, committing to Big Bend Community College (Washington) for baseball, and fellow senior Lorelai Sherrod, committing to Treasure Valley Community College (Oregon) for softball, are two of the latest Northern Utah preps to officially sign their offers.
Skidmore (LHP) won three games for the Royals as a junior and struck out 43 total batters in the process (top 40 in 5A). At the plate, Skidmore (.319) tallied 10 total RBI and nine runs on 22 hits.
Sherrod returns for the Royals in 2026 with 22 RBI, including 10 doubles, four triples and a home run, on her career resume.
Utah PGA Junior Qualifier nears
The official dates for the local Utah PGA Junior Qualifier, held June 8-9 at Glen Eagle Golf Club in Syracuse, are teetering around the green.
The qualifier features junior players ages 10-18, eligible for spots at several national and worldwide events tied to the PGA Junior Series.
The two-day, 36-hole tournament featured three local stars – Weber High alum Cohen Wood (now at Oregon Tech), Layton senior Chase Randall and Fremont alum Jace Nielsen – in last year’s top 10 and is one of several launchpads for players eyeing an invite to the state amateur.
Registration for interested participants is available online at utahpga.com.
Ferrin, Kelly in the Senior Bowl
Two BYU seniors with Northern Utah ties, linebacker Jack Kelly and kicker Will Ferrin, are headed to Mobile, Alabama, for the 2026 Panini Senior Bowl on Jan. 31, at Hancock Whitney Stadium.
Kelly, originally from Kearns, left Weber State for the Cougars in 2023 after leading the Big Sky with four forced fumbles as a redshirt sophomore. He’d set BYU’s single-season hurries record (14) since 2000 and garner All-Big 12 First Team status in his first season.
Ferrin, a Davis High alum, transferred to BYU from Boise State for his final three years of eligibility in 2022. In three seasons, he’d finish a career 81.7% (58 of 71) on field goals and miss just one extra point attempt in 123 tries.
Of the Senior Bowl’s 106 annual invitations last year, 50 of those players were selected in the top three rounds of the NFL Draft; All 32 teams picked at least one senior bowler, and 99% were either drafted or signed as an undrafted free agent.
The Senior Bowl kicks off at 1:30 p.m. on NFL Network.
