LAYTON — One has to wonder who designed the Fremont High boys basketball road uniform.

It’s hard to imagine who would put black numerals on a dark blue jersey, making it difficult for fans in the stands to identify a particular player, having to resort to the color of his shoes or his haircut.

On the court, where split seconds count and don’t allow that luxury, Northridge had a difficult time keeping track of Fremont seniors Zach Hancock and Cam Campbell, regardless of the number they were wearing.

Hancock scored 23 points and Campbell added 19 as the Silverwolves overcame a third-quarter lapse with a strong fourth period, taking a 77-67 Region 5 victory over the Knights on Wednesday night.

“Coming on the road, it’s a business trip. We’re here to get a win; we’re here to show that Fremont’s on the map,” Campbell said. “We lost our last game. We have to take it one step at a time, come to practice every day, locked in … mental reps.”

Not mentally, but mechanically, the wheels were coming off for Fremont when the Knights went on a 10-0 run late in the third quarter and took a 50-49 lead with 2:32 left in the period on a layup by Jace Whitear.

The teams traded missed shots until Hancock scored a rebound basket with 2.8 seconds remaining, giving Fremont a 51-50 edge heading into the fourth quarter.

Fremont (4-11, 2-2 Region 5) won the final frame 26-17 to capture the road triumph.

“That basket gave us momentum going in (to the fourth); trying to get a restart. They went on a run, we went on our run,” Hancock said. “We all kept our heads up; worked hard as a team to finish the game.”

Hancock scored 12 points in the fourth quarter, including two free throws, converting opportunities after a made basket.

“Credit my point guards, they were dishing me the ball. I came in with confidence and closed it out,” Hancock said. “At practice, we work on it a lot; going strong to the rim.”

At 6-foot-1 and 205 pounds, Hancock created several second-chance points with six offensive rebounds and 11 overall, also chipping in three assists.

“Fight for position; stay in the right spot … crashing the offensive and defensive boards. Just physical; beef. Use my mass and my height to get to them,” Hancock said. “We worked as a team and had a good game plan from our coaches. We moved the ball inside, taking open shots with great looks all around.”

It was still a game when Jack Hodson scored inside for Northridge halfway through the fourth quarter, cutting the deficit to 61-58, but Fremont countered with a 16-9 burst the rest of the way.

A layup by Campbell and a rebound bucket by Hancock jump-started the run.

“It’s the little things that are momentum builders; them going on a little bit of a run, then us coming down and executing and finishing at the rim,” Campbell said. “It’s that mentality of next play, next play. Not everything is going to go our way, but we’re going to fight back and do what we can.

“Then we kept feeding our big man and got those points,” Campbell said.

Easton Hansen also had double digits for the Silverwolves with 12 points and 10 assists, while Kourt Duft had nine points, including 6 of 6 from the free-throw line.

Eleven of Campbell’s points came in the first quarter, when Fremont led 27-19 after one.

“I was taking what they gave me. If they’re going to let me drive with my left hand to the rim, I’m taking advantage; I’m going to finish with my dominant hand and be the dominant player that I am,” Campbell said.

A back-and-forth second stanza saw Northridge win it 17-16 to trail 43-36 at the break, keyed by 14 halftime points from senior guard Theo Roach.

Roach scored 20 points on the night and was joined in double figures by Whitear’s 13 and Howard Hansen’s 10. Hodson added 14 points off the bench for the Knights (7-9, 0-5).

“I wanted to play hard for my team; get us going. I’ve been working on my game a lot, trying to be the best version of myself. It’s my last year,” Roach said.

Fremont was up 49-40 midway through the third quarter on a rebound basket by Campbell, setting the stage for Northridge’s 10-0 run, before the Knights ran out of gas in the fourth period.

“We picked it up. We played our best basketball and got stops on defense. We were communicating, moving the ball on offense and getting shots up,” Roach said. “Then things kind of spiraled. The defense wasn’t the same; we were tired. (Number) 50 (Hancock) is a big dude.”

Some numbers are hard to hide.
