Clearfield High's Jacob Ramboz, the team's manager, and coach Andrew Astle share a moment on senior night before a boys wrestling dual against West Field at Clearfield High School on Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2024, in Clearfield.

CLEARFIELD — Andrew Astle is getting used to the Senior Day routine.

A two-time state champion at Layton High, Astle is in the coaching game now with his latest round of seniors, nine total, headed for the postseason or hanging up the headgear for good following their final home dual Wednesday when the Falcons hosted West Field.

Eight seniors on the boys end (Kade Moon, Jack George, Conor Fritz, Garrett Pickett, Tanner Harward, Alex Greenhalgh, Joseph Ramboz and Jacob Ramboz), and lone girls senior Taylor Sims were among those recognized as Astle’s third senior wrestling class at Clearfield.

Clearfield split the night with a 46-3o victory in the girls bouts and a 37-29 defeat to West Field’s boys in the final set of the night.

“I would say this team showed a lot of unity,” Astle said. “A lot of them are developing. The best part is they’re able to grow together and you’ve seen it throughout the year where they just get better every week. It’s been special to see them come together.”

Sims did not compete on Wednesday night, but the Falcons gritted out a win in her place.

The Falcons opened the night winning five matches on the girls end. Clearfield junior Cadence Fox defeated West Field sophomore Sky Wild by a 29-20 major decision in the 235-pound bout; Daisy Fackrell and Tessa Mautz stacked two more wins for the Falcons at 155 pounds.

Clearfield managed five more wins, including one by forfeit, in a one-round loss on the boys side.

Liam Weaver (106 pounds) and Evan Brubaker (120 pounds) gave Clearfield a 12-0 start to the round with a fall and technical fall in consecutive rounds. Freshman Noah Ramboz (215 pounds) Junior Gavon Mantz (157 pounds), and Kingston Gailey (win by forfeit) stacked three more wins for the Falcons down the stretch, but it wasn’t enough to hold back West Field in the late rounds.

Logan Hardy (165 pounds) defeated Joseph Ramboz 6-1 (fall, 3:24), Zach Ericksen (175 pounds) defeated Greenhalgh 15-4 (major decision), Judson Yorgason (190 pounds) defeated Harward 3-0 (fall, 1:07), Eli Morales (215 pounds) defeated Noah Ramboz 6-1 (fall, 1:46), and Ryan Rowley (285 pounds) topped Pickett 3-0 (fall, 1:04) in the final match of the night.

Despite the loss, Noah Ramboz, brother of Jacob, the team’s manager, and newcomer Joseph Ramboz, said the season’s already paid off in terms of unbreakable relationships. The outgoing senior nodded to Astle, his coach of all three seasons, in the process.

“It’s exciting, especially with a team and relationships that’re like a family,” Noah Ramboz said. “It’s time to move on, but it’s kind of sad at the same time. I feel like (Astle) is a big figure for all of us to look up to, especially as a state champion and a coach.

“He just makes us want to be better every day.”

Noah Ramboz, now at 13-9 on the season, and Pickett, now 19-12, are two of Clearfield’s front-runners for the upcoming 5A state tournament in Orem. Astle expects big things from the two seniors, and he believes Wednesday’s losses are hardly indicative of their potential.

“Just seeing where (Pickett)’s going this year, and also a few of our other guys, I would say they’re getting some big wins and big pins for us,” Astle said. “Tonight, it didn’t go that way necessarily, but throughout the season we’ve had a lot of people step up and be true leaders.”
