TAYLOR — The raucous, erratic gyms are Roy High senior Boston Greenhalgh’s favorite.
Greenhalgh, Roy’s 6-foot-3 starting point guard, provided a Region 5 clash at West Field with one of its most physical presences on Friday night and led his Royals in maintaining an 11-point lead through the fourth quarter for an all-too-important, 69-58 boys basketball region road win.
A year ago, this matchup, the first of its kind, was a nonregion win in favor of a first-year West Field program; Roy finished that season 6-17 overall and was second-worst in the region.
But feeding off the sidelines and bringing it onto the floor is this team’s superpower, Greenhalgh said.
“I love this type of basketball,” Greenhalgh said. “I love this environment. … The crowd, I love when they talk crazy. I love it, I feed off that energy.”
Led by sophomore guard Anthony Parker’s game-high 20 points, the Royals (12-4, 4-1 Region 5) held West Field (10-5, 5-1) to just three different field-goal shooters in the second half. Roy senior big Jesse Jones added 16 points; Greenhalgh and senior forward Jake Hamblin dropped 13 apiece.
A poor night defensively soured West Field senior guard Jaden Fowers’ game-high 25 points, including a career-high seven triples (six of which came in the second half). Senior point guard Daxton Laughter added 16 points, senior guard Cason Malan got seven, and junior swingman Maddux Purser picked up six. Drew Faddis and Jaxxon Gerace combined for fourpoints .
Down 19-9 at the end of the first quarter, West Field struggled to slow down Jones, who netted 13 first-half points, and coughed up another 11 to Parker to trail by 14 at the break. Second-year Longhorns coach Mike Russell said his side left far too many possessions open-ended.
“They beat us, it seemed, at every loose ball, every rebound — all the effort plays. That’s what disappointed me the most,” Russell said. “I can handle not making baskets and I know we’re never going to play a perfect game, but I felt like Roy was just tougher in every way.”
Fowers heated up behind the arc through the final 16 minutes, a theme that West Field clung to while chasing down a double-digit deficit. Roy visited the free-throw line nine times in the second half (finishing 18 of 24 overall), and those late-game freebies made a difference.
Laughter, opening up for two 3s in the fourth quarter, and Fowers combined for 20 of West Field’s 22 fourth-quarter points; the other two-point bucket came from Purser.
“We run our defense, and we kind of run our offense through our defense,” Jones said. “We kind of just kept them out of the middle. They worked a couple inside out, but we kept them out of the middle and they weren’t very effective in the paint, which was a big goal for us.”
The Longhorns shot a perfect 7-of-7 at the charity stripe, but a failure to meet Roy at the whistle alone won’t make up for a lack of physicality at the rim. Ready to push West Field harder, Malan said Saturday’s practice will bring the intensity because there’s no alternative.
“We’ve got to come together,” Malan said. “We’ve got to have more energy coming out. … It starts tomorrow at practice. … It’s holding people accountable, it’s not letting people slack.
“We put it on us as players to make sure we come out next practice and work hard, and just come out strong just to show (Russell) we’re ready and we’re not going to hold our heads on this.”
Roy, with wins in four of its last five games, now looks ahead to Box Elder (7-8, 2-2) with confidence after scratching off the first of two region meetings with West Field. The next one against the Longhorns, coming Wednesday, Feb. 11, at Roy, could very well be a region-decider in Weber County.
Friday’s win is another step toward those region rights and an important one to the Roy locker room, Jones said.
“I think it goes a long way,” Jones said. “This is one that’s make or break on the season. We’ve got to keep pushing for it if we’re chasing this region championship we’re after.”
Roy travels to Box Elder on Wednesday, Jan. 21; West Field looks to rebound with a nonregion home matchup with Weber on Tuesday, Jan. 20.
