CLEARFIELD — As it worked out, Fremont and Clearfield were both undefeated in Region 5 play heading into their first girls basketball contest this season to conclude the first half of the region schedule.
Things shaped up for a good matchup and Wednesday’s bout didn’t disappoint.
Fremont trailed after three quarters but took the final frame decisively, capturing a 54-47 road victory and thus the top spot in the league standings.
“It’s really awesome. It was a big game but we also knew we had to prepare and take it like any other game,” Fremont junior forward Abby Christensen said. “Prepare like we have before and play like we normally play.”
Normal was hard to do for a Fremont team whose shortest player is 5-foot-4, facing a Clearfield squad starting three players 5-foot-5 or under.
The Falcons couldn’t swipe at the ball above their heads, so they resorted to tying it up for alternate possessions at Fremont’s waistbands.
“We need to work on keeping the ball high. They’re small, but they’re scrappy and go for everything,” Christensen said. “They’re a really good team and rebound hard.”
Three Clearfield players fouled out trying to attack the Silverwolves bigs, which led to the disparity in the fourth quarter.
“I told my team to be physical; front the post and pressure the ball, making it difficult for them to get it inside,” Clearfield coach JT Soter said. “We fouled a lot so they got a ton of points from the free-throw line.”
Christensen took advantage of Clearfield’s strategy, stepping out for two 3-pointers but otherwise working low and shooting 11 of 13 at the free-throw line on her way to a game-high 26 points.
“That’s my biggest quality that makes me good. If my shots aren’t falling, I can go inside. I’ve worked really hard on that,” Christensen said.
Fremont (14-2, 6-0 Region 5) scored 11 points in each of the first three quarters, then had the breakout fourth period, netting 21 to Clearfield’s 12, to pull away.
“With our fouling out, they had some mismatches. We pressed in a zone and 33 (Christensen) and 22 (Brynn Wadman) had some open looks,” Soter said. “We should have stayed man.”
Clearfield (10-7, 5-1) had taken a 35-33 lead at the end of the third quarter, fueled by seven points from senior guard Izzy Wyaskett, including a 3-pointer at the 1:25 mark for the last points of the period.
Three free throws by Destini Gomez with 6:38 remaining gave the Falcons a 38-35 edge, before Christensen hit her first of two treys seconds later, tying it at 38.
The Falcons went up 39-38 on a free throw from Ciara De La O, bringing Fremont freshman Ellie McArthur to center stage.
McArthur made four straight free throws, the Silverwolves led 42-39, and held on from there.
She drained 5 of 6 free throws in the fourth quarter and 8 of 9 overall, notching 10 points on Wednesday.
“My coach trusts me and I’ve practiced this. I’ve had lots of reps and take them with confidence,” McArthur said. “If I overthink it, they never go in. I’ve done it like a million times.”
The Falcons wouldn’t go away, getting within two points twice more in the last three minutes, but Fremont was able to answer.
Christensen’s second 3 of the fourth quarter put Fremont up 48-43 with 2:45 left. She tallied 11 points in that fateful fourth frame.
“We just needed to calm ourselves down; slow it down and know eventually we’re going to be good,” Christensen said.
In a war of attrition, the Falcons finally wore down on the glass against their taller foe.
“We got a lot of offensive rebounds. Our shots were off but in the fourth quarter, we were able to convert,” McArthur said. “No panic; we stayed really steady and that helped a lot.”
Wadman also scored double figures for Fremont with 12 points off the bench, including a pair of 3s and 4 of 4 from the charity stripe.
For Clearfield, Wyaskett scored 12 points and De La O added 10.
“We’re a great team, we’ve just got to get over the hump in certain moments. I’m happy with the way we’re playing,” Soter said. “If we win, we win. If we lose, we lose. As long as we’re playing hard every night, most of the time we’re going to win.”
