KAYSVILLE — The sign of a good team is when they can nit-pick things during a 37-point nonregion win, one that initiated a rare running clock.

Davis High girls basketball captured all four quarters, blowing out Corner Canyon 61-24 on Tuesday, yet still found room for improvement after the game.

“We didn’t look that great all four quarters, which is what we’re trying to do as a team, and the girls know that,” Davis coach Nicole Waddoups said. “Second quarter wasn’t great for us; we went in at halftime and didn’t really adjust, as much as refocused.

“If we’re going to go to state and be successful, we’ve got to play four quarters and we’re not there yet; we’re working on it,” Waddoups said.

Precluding that stale second stanza, the Darts got off to a quick start, taking the first quarter by a 22-11 count.

Davis led 5-3 before senior guard Chloe Peery scored a fast-break layup and a 3-pointer, causing an early Corner Canyon timeout at the 5:54 mark of the first period.

“The energy that we started the game off with … all the team working together,” Peery said. “We like to play that way, so I’m glad I was able to get a 3 and the layup.”

A 9-5 second period led to the halftime alterations and a strong second-half showing, even though the Darts were up 31-16.

“Our second quarter was kind of rough, but we talked as a team about chemistry and we played together the third and fourth quarters like we should,” Peery said.

Waddoups liberally substituted in the second half and several Davis players had their moments as the Darts won the third quarter 16-6, evolving into a 47-22 margin.

Peery, a captain, scored 12 points for the Darts, including a pair of 3-pointers. Junior forward Kate Willard also had 12 points (5 of 5 from the free-throw line) and junior forward Cambell Christensen came off the bench and checked the double-digit box with 10 points.

“I want to bring the energy on the court, whether high-fiving a girl after a missed layup or saying ‘good job, you got the next one,'” Pery said. “It’s a lot of confidence, and my teammates boost me too; we just get it done.”

With a small Region 1, the Darts had two byes on their schedule, and the Corner Canyon (3-16) game filled one of those slots after the first half of league play wrapped up with a tough loss against Syracuse last Friday.

“We bounced back in practice and worked really hard. We can’t get too ahead of ourselves; they’ve only won three games, but we have to play our game. Play together, play fast,” Peery said. “This game was so we didn’t have a long break; it helped to have a game and get our momentum going.”

Davis (12-7) blended good offense and defense in the final frame with a 14-2 advantage.

“We’re a very good defensive team and that transfers to our offense,” Peery added.

Waddoups analyzed her team’s performance this way, giving them props at the end:

“We started the game phenomenally … very, very well, with high energy. We have some girls who are sick, so our energy and focus came down because we were ahead by so much. But balanced scoring means we’re playing well together as a team.”
