KAYSVILLE — While 44 degrees and chilly might not suit the crowd, it’s what Bear River senior midfielder Brooklyn Briel considers her ideal lacrosse weather.
Anything requiring extra layers is when Briel believes she plays best, and it’d be awfully tough to argue with a two-time state champion after the senior’s hat trick at Davis High on Tuesday.
Briel (finding the net three times) and her fellow captain Ella Criddle (producing a game-high five goals) led the Bears in Tuesday’s 13-3 road win, a fourth consecutive victory to start the season and another on the road following a 19-point win at 5A Hillcrest last week.
The Bears (4-0) are winning ballgames and are finally taking shape, Briel said, as the defending 4A state champions look forward to another 6A road test Friday at Bingham.
“These first few weeks were a little rough,” Briel said. “I think we’ve come together pretty well and (quicker) than we have in past seasons. We’ve developed some chemistry, so we work pretty well together and it’s working out.”
Criddle, finding the net before the first-half clock expired, bumped the Bears up five before halftime, and sophomore attacker Mollie Call produced a similar goal to go up six on the Darts (0-2) by the fourth quarter. Call added her second goal in the final frame. Senior Emma Kierstead added two goals and sophomore Jeanine Webb chipped in one.
Davis, down six, caught a bit of momentum via junior attacker Gentry Chapman, cutting Bear River’s lead back to five with 10:48 still to play. But fellow midfielder Claire Chapman caught a yellow card soon after, and the Bears piled a 5-0 run to end the night.
Gentry Chapman, Coleman and senior Kallista Wright produced all three Davis goals. Thirteen goals allowed by the Darts defense are still the fewest Bear River has produced in its first four games.
But whether it’s by 13 or one, Bear River coach Jeremy Webb has built his success, including last year’s fourth consecutive state title, coming 8-6 over Waterford. It’s come from the perpetual motivation to find the net at any cost and any name on the field.
“I think a lot of it has to do with just that they believe in one another,” Webb said. “They play for each other. It doesn’t matter who’s scoring; they’re happy for each other. They’re passing to whoever is open and that’s why you win. That’s why you win four state titles in a row.”
The road toward a fifth spectacle has only begun, and Webb isn’t making any promises either. Such a result can only be determined by the Bears and their five team captains, each of whom has already processed one or more titles to understand just how tough you have to be to make it.
“Our senior class does a really good job with making sure that the (underclassmen) don’t get too — like the moment’s not too big for them, you know?” Webb said. “They’ve been there before, and it’s the same with the juniors and sophomores, really, they’ve been there before. Good things will happen if you trust (our) process.”
Bear River and Bingham are set for a 7:30 p.m. faceoff Friday. Davis travels to Alta at 7 p.m. Thursday in search of its first win.
