OGDEN — One of the Ogden School District’s latest revitalization efforts came to fruition with the ribbon-cutting of Ogden High School’s new and improved baseball field for Monday’s home celebration against North Sanpete.
The multi-year project, led by Ogden-based R&L Construction and players themselves, includes much-needed upgrades to the infield and outfield: a new drainage system, backstop, warning track, dugouts, batting cages and fresh sod for the west berm.
Ogden is 1-1 at its new home following an 18-1 loss to North Sanpete. The Tigers won their true home debut, a 10-5 win over Weber High, during last week’s makeup date for a canceled March 2 opener.
Since taking over last year, Ogden coach Kyle Bubak, setting out to revive the team’s on-field success, has set a standard for his players to love and care for their home dirt before anyone picks up a ball, glove or bat.
“They’ve all been given assignments, and we’ve got three guys that ran (our) grounds crew last summer, so they know all about the field,” Bubak said. “There’s not a lot I have to do besides making sure every guy has an assignment (and) those three field leaders — Grant Little, Spencer Deichman, Luke Christensen — they essentially run the grounds crew.
“And, we’ve got Bubba (Darryl Paulette), who owns a landscaping company, so the combination of all of that sets our expectations high. It’s even more important for us to take care of it.”
Four seniors — Easton Green (OF/3B/P), Denver Rhodes (3B/P), Xavier Aldous (OF/P), and Rodrigo Torres (1B/P) — have played on Ogden’s home field for two years or longer. Those upperclassmen, and three designated “field leaders” as assigned by Bubak, are staking their names in raising their school’s baseball program from the ground up this season.
One of those seniors, Torres, set up Rhodes’ sacrifice RBI with a double in the bottom of the third in Monday’s loss. Torres (4.0 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 7 K) opted not to play as a freshman or sophomore, but returned to his childhood game as a junior for Bubak’s first season at the helm.
It’s a work in progress, Torres said of the team, but a new field pushes the ceiling higher for his teammates this season.
“It means a lot to us,” Torres said. “It just gives us a new opportunity to expand our program. Our team really enjoys this new field where we can just go play ball, practice and enjoy the game.”
Ogden’s nonregion schedule, including 5A foes in Timpanogos and Murray (two programs that won 17-plus games last year), has been anything but easy. The Tigers have 13 total RBI through their first six games.
But, partially thanks to a new field, Ogden’s practices are smoother, and attitudes are brighter about the team’s future, Bubak said.
“We’re trying to create an environment where the kids will succeed after baseball,” Bubak said.
“As far as the field goes, and the standard we’re trying to create, the field supports that more because they have all the opportunities that they need, the resources that they need to be able to play more baseball.”
Ogden heads off on a two-game road trip to Provo High (Wednesday) and Juan Diego (Thursday) before returning home to face Malad (Idaho) on Friday.
