PLEASANT VIEW — Clearfield and Weber were briefly tied 2-2 after one inning of high school softball Tuesday, but for the Warriors, success was fleeting.

The Falcons scored seven runs in the top of the second inning and coasted from there, wiping out the Warriors 19-5 in a nonregion rout.

Sophomore third baseman Abbie Hale had an RBI single in the first for the Falcons, then followed it up with a three-run double during the second inning outburst.

“At the beginning of the game, I was looking for extension; I wanted to stay through the ball, especially with a slower pitcher … waiting on it,” Hale said. “I was looking to find grass, to push the ball out there, get it in the air to score those runs. Hit the ball hard somewhere.”

Hale finished 4 for 6 at the plate, with four RBIs and three runs scored. When she wasn’t driving in runs, she twice led off innings and came full circle to the dish.

“When I lead off, I’m not so much looking for a specific pitch, but just something I can hit, find a gap and start a rally; have a quality at-bat,” Hale said. “On my second at-bat, I was trying to hit it to the outside, but ended up getting an inside pitch and punched it to left.”

All nine Clearfield (6-1) batters had at least one hit, with eight of the nine getting at least two, as the Falcons rapped 22 base knocks on the day.

Shortstop Skylar Davis scored four runs, while catcher Alexandra Bingham and left fielder Emma Dishongh each scored thrice.

Designated hitter Ariana Sanchez, Dishongh and Davis had three hits apiece, while seven different Falcons had at least one RBI.

In the circle, Clearfield freshman pitcher Hannah Hensley pitched a complete game, scattering 10 hits and striking out five.

“The game was actually really good. I’m glad I had my team backing me up both offensively and defensively,” Hensley said. “That was really helpful.”

Hensley walked the first batter she faced, then settled down and didn’t issue a free pass the rest of the day.

“I went in very nervous, but honestly, I enjoy it. I think it’s really cool being a freshman pitcher on this team,” Hensley said. “It’s nerve-racking. I’m not used to it. I’m an only child, so I don’t know anything about high school sports.”

After being staked to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, Hensley had to shake off the jitters when she gave up a two-run, moonshot home run to Weber third baseman Raegan Blaisdell in the bottom half, resulting in the early 2-2 knot.

“I will say I was upset when I gave away the home run, but overall it was a good game, pitching-wise,” Hensley said.

Clearfield has played in a tournament in St. George already this season (where Hensley pitched in all but one game), whereas Tuesday was the season-opener for the Warriors (0-1).

“We’ve only been on the field twice for practice … trying to see where girls can play and getting experience in the dirt instead of the gym makes a difference,” first-year Weber coach Janette Blaisdell said. “It was a good first game to get some bugs out and see what we need to work on for upcoming games.”

Weber spread the wealth around, with seven batters reaching base safely. Left fielder Jentry Skaggs had two hits and Raegan Blaisdell notched three, adding a double and a single to her homer.

With two freshmen and sophomore starter Emery Hayes on the roster for Weber, Blaisdell left Hayes in the circle for the entire seven innings.

Hayes absorbed the beating, allowing the 22 hits, but nothing more than a double, while walking three and striking out one.

On a blustery, cold, cloudy day, Clearfield wasn’t deterred by the noticeable headwinds.

“I feel like it was solid all around. Our freshman, our pitcher Hannah definitely did well,” Hale said. “It’s so much fun having your team back you up in these kind of situations, especially with the weather and stuff.”
