LAYTON — Two days after a 12-0 blowout loss to Bingham, Layton High baseball trailed again, this time in a competitive 6-4 game with highly regarded Corner Canyon on Thursday.

But the Lancers batted around in the bottom of the sixth inning and pulled away for a 12-6, come-from-behind victory over the Chargers in a nonregion contest.

Second baseman Zane Morgan and first baseman Bridger Mascaro had consecutive two-run doubles, giving the Lancers the lead for good as they sent 12 batters to the plate and scored eight runs in the sixth.

Three straight hitters reached base, leaving them juiced for Morgan, and he delivered a two-bagger that tied the game at six, putting runners at second and third.

“I was just trying to score the runner from third. Bases loaded … I’m trying to get a fly ball into the outfield. I needed to get the job done,” Morgan said. “That double got the momentum back and from there, it was kind of over. We kept going and strung them together.”

Mascaro’s two-RBI double meant five consecutive Lancers reached base and Layton went up 8-6 on his hit.

“It’s kind of a domino effect. Zane had the really clutch double, then I come up and it keeps going from there,” Mascaro said. “Coach (Robert Ferneau) said, ‘you know what to do here.’ I’m trying to score the guy, looking for something straight and I got it, and hit it to left field.”

Judged unavailable before the game by Ferneau, Austin Pritchett nonetheless came on in the top of the sixth inning for the Lancers (3-2) and worked out of a jam, then pitched a perfect seventh inning for the win.

“He’s a strike thrower. He pounded the zone and that’s all we needed at that point in time,” Ferneau said.

Layton’s sixth-inning rally was the second time the Lancers came back from a deficit; in the first, the Lancers trailed 1-0 in the third inning before plating four runs — three on a towering home run by right fielder Jowell Dasni.

Dasni finished with three runs scored and the trio of RBIs.

Corner Canyon (4-1) eventually closed the gap and took the 6-4 lead into that fateful sixth inning.

“Being up 4-1 is never enough in high school baseball,” Ferneau said. “We had momentum for a little bit, then it kind of slowly went away before we got it back in the bottom of the sixth.

“The kids had great at-bats in that sixth inning. The dugout was into it a little bit more; more intent. You’re dealing with 16, 17, 18-year-old kids,” Ferneau said. “Baseball is a game of consistency. You can’t get too high; you can’t get too low. We weren’t very good on Tuesday, and we were pretty good today.”
