Prep roundup: Bear River softball nears title series; Fremont baseball opens series with win

SPANISH FORK — No. 2 Bear River High softball scored three runs in the sixth inning to trigger a 10-0, run-rule victory over No. 11 Deseret Peak (17-16) in 4A bracket play Wednesday evening at Spanish Fork Complex.

Brielle Gardiner batted 2 for 4 with a home run, a double and four RBIs for Bear River (25-6). Molly Canfield went 3 for 3 with a double and drove in two. Samantha Theurer batted 2 for 3 with two RBIs. Kailyn Rice added two hits. Kate Wilson pitched all six innings with six hits, one walk and six strikeouts.

The Bears next play at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, facing the winner of the 10:30 a.m. elimination game between Dixie and Deseret Peak. Bear River will have two shots to claim their half of the bracket and advance to the 4A championship series, scheduled for Friday and Saturday at BYU.

BEAR RIVER 16, DIXIE 6

SPANISH FORK — No. 2 Bear River scored 10 runs in the third inning to advance in 4A bracket play with a win over No. 7 Dixie (19-12) early Wednesday afternoon.

Alice Roche batted 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI for Bear River. Londyn Gamble went 2 for 4 with a double and drove in four. Kate Wilson batted 2 for 4 with a double and three RBIs. Paycie Richards hit a two-run double. Marley Tisdol added a double. Brielle Gardiner got the win with three hits, three earned runs, six walks and six strikeouts over 4 1/3 innings.


BASEBALL

FREMONT 5, WASATCH 3

PLAIN CITY — No. 7 Fremont scored three runs in the third inning to take a 5-1 lead and win Game 1 of a 5A second-round super regional series over No. 10 Wasatch (17-11).

Bodee Hawkins batted 3 for 3 for Fremont (18-8). Adam Mikesell went 3 for 3 with a double and drove in three. Tad Grange hit a single and earned the win on the mound in a complete game, allowing three earned runs on eight hits while striking out five.

WEST JORDAN 4, ROY 3

WEST JORDAN — No. 6 West Jordan (19-7) scored one run in the bottom of the seventh inning to walk off No. 22 Roy in Game 1 of a 5A second-round super regional series.

Parker Skidmore and Jace Barela each hit an RBI single for Roy (12-16). Lincoln Baty added a single.

JORDAN 5, LAYTON 3

LAYTON — No. 8 Layton gave up four runs in the sixth inning in a home loss to No. 9 Jordan (14-12) in Game 1 of their 6A first-round super regional series.

Nik Bielaczyc batted 2 for 4 with a solo home run for Layton (18-7). Jowell Dasni hit a solo home run. Burkon Beus hit a double and scored a run. Bielaczyc took the hard-luck loss with seven hits and five earned runs with four strikeouts over six innings.

LEHI 11, DAVIS 0

LEHI — No. 12 Davis was held to two hits in a 6A first-round super regional series Game 1 loss at No. 5 Lehi (15-10) in five innings.

Mitch Ossmen and Will Nixon each hit a single for Davis (15-11).

CRIMSON CLIFFS 11, BEAR RIVER 4

KEARNS — No. 6 Bear River’s season came to an end in a loss to No. 7 Crimson Cliffs (18-12) in a 4A bracket play elimination game.

Dallen Rice batted 2 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs for Bear River. Ethan Higgs went 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI. Stephen Starnes hit an RBI single.

The Bears end the season with a 21-9 record.
