Girls lacrosse playoffs: Fremont, Bear River advance to state championship games
SALT LAKE CITY — Clara McCormick scored a golden goal with 14 seconds left in extra time to lead No. 2 Fremont High past No. 6 Olympus 14-13 in the 5A girls lacrosse semifinals at Westminster University.
After Olympus (11-9) scored seven straight goals to take a 9-7 lead midway through the third quarter, Fremont (18-2) answered with six consecutive goals to take a 13-9 lead. Olympus scored the final four goals of regulation to force sudden-death overtime.
Fremont goalkeeper Greeley Kelley made a spectacular save in the final seconds of regulation, then another save in overtime to keep Olympus off the board and extend the extra session.
With 25 seconds left, Kate Jenkins had a shot from free position go wide, and Fremont retained possession. McCormick came open just outside the crease and buried her shot for the win.
Makenzi Overdiek led Fremont with four goals and an assist, and Brylee Jeppsen tallied four goals. Kate Jenkins had two goals and two assists. Bailey Sargent notched two goals and an assist before getting her second yellow card disqualified her shortly before halftime. McCormick, Ava Jewett and Avery Jenkins each netted once.
The Silverwolves advance to the state championship game where they will tussle with No. 1 Park City (18-2) at Zions Bank Stadium in Herriman, scheduled for 4 p.m. Thursday.
BEAR RIVER 20, TIMPANOGOS 1
SALT LAKE CITY — No. 1 Bear River led 13-0 at the half in a 4A semifinal win over No. 5 Timpanogos (12-6) at Westminster.
Mollie Call tallied five goals and two assists for Bear River (21-0). Jeanine Webb added five goals and an assist while Emma Kierstead also scored five goals. Ella Criddle had two goals and an assist. Brooklyn Briel netted once with three assists and Claire Wood scored one goal.
The Bears will go for their fifth consecutive state championship and 79th consecutive victory when they face No. 2 Provo (19-2) at Zions Bank Stadium, set for 1 p.m. Thursday.
