5A baseball playoffs: Fremont bows out on final day of bracket play
Fremont High’s baseball season came to a close on the final day of double-elimination bracket play at Utah Valley University.
No. 2 Maple Mountain defeated the No. 7 Silverwolves for the second time this week, claiming a 12-1 victory in six innings Wednesday in an elimination game.
Fremont’s season ends with a 20-10 record. Maple Mountain (Spanish Fork) advanced to a rematch with Pleasant Grove later Wednesday evening.
Maple Mountain designated hitter Mitch Walker got the best of Fremont starter Payson Malan with a three-run homer in the top of the first inning to get the Golden Eagles an early upper hand.
Of Fremont’s four hits, catcher Ashur Clark provided his team’s lone run with a solo homer in the bottom of the second.
It was a 5-1 game until the sixth when Maple Mountain took advantage of four walks with a seven-run frame, capped with Walker rapping a two-run double to put the game into run-rule territory.
The Silverwolves doubled their hit output with Landon Palmer and Alan Vega singles in the bottom of the sixth but Fremont couldn’t push a run across to extend the game.
Tad Grange added a leadoff single in the third inning.
