OGDEN — The Ogden Tigers haven’t beaten Morgan — next week’s opponent — since 1968.

The 18 straight losses since then were irrelevant to the Ogden student body as it broke into a “We want Morgan!” serenade from the stands 15 seconds into the second half.

That pretty much summed up the night for the Tigers.

Union showed little resistance as Ogden plowed the Cougars from start to finish in a 48-6 victory.

One week after winning 24-21 at Grantsville, the Tigers are feeling good about football.

“After Grantsville, our pump is up at an all-time high,” Ogden senior Blake Weston said. “We’re stacking days again. We’re going day in and day out getting our work in. The energy is high.

“We love it. It’s so much fun. The leadership and coaching are really good.”

The Tigers wasted little time jumping on a Union team that — with only nine completed passes in six games entering Friday night — is not constructed to overcome big deficits.

Weston opened the scoring by hauling in a 16-yard pass in the end zone from Emmett Rector on Ogden’s opening possession.

A promising second drive was halted when Jack Thompson fumbled the ball at the tail end of a 14-yard reception. But Thompson quickly made up for the mistake by taking a punt 82 yards for a touchdown as the first quarter expired.

“It’s huge having those guys step up and flush plays,” Weston said. “You kind of always encourage that, just to flush a play and get back to it. Jack’s a really good player at that.”

As for Weston, he was just getting started.

Rector threw him a second scoring toss early in the second period to make it 20-0. Weston hauled in the pass, sidestepped a pair of defenders at the 10 and turned it into a 45-yard touchdown.

The Ogden defensive pressure stymied Union’s flexbone triple option for most of the evening, giving the Tiger offense repeated opportunities.

Weston caught his third touchdown of the half on Ogden’s next possession when Rector found him alone in the back of the end zone on fourth-and-goal from the 5, giving the Tigers a 27-0 lead at the break.

“It’s just practice. Me and Emmett have a good connection,” Weston said. “(Assistant coach Brogan Poll) trusted me a lot. A lot of credit to Brog, feeding me the rock. He trusts me enough to go make those plays.

“The O-line holds up great. They’re a bunch of dogs. My receivers also helped me get open, like Jack’s running off the safety for me. It’s an all-around effort.”

Ogden dug into its bag of tricks after receiving the second-half kickoff.

Weston, a quarterback last year, took a handoff before launching an 80-yard touchdown pass to a wide-open Nash Bockwoldt.

“We were practicing it this week, it just worked this time” a laughing Weston said. “I thought I was going to hit it a little short and I was like, ‘Oh shoot.'”

The Cougars finally found the end zone late in the third period on a 1-yard keeper from quarterback Dylan Watahomigie.

Thompson and Anderson Curry had touchdown runs to finalize the scoring for Ogden.

“I thought we did good (against the run). We had some stupid penalties, but overall we had multiple good schemes,” Weston said. “I felt like we were ready for them and that we knew what was coming.”

The win moves the Tigers into the top half of the region standings (5-3, 2-1 3A North) with the road trip to Morgan looming next Thursday. One more victory will assure Ogden of a winning record for three consecutive seasons for the first time since the 1965-67 campaigns.
