Prep football roundup: Davis outlasts Farmington in Region 1 slugfest
KAYSVILLE — Paden Toula tossed two touchdown passes to Bode Sparrow to lead Davis High football to a 14-3 region win over Farmington in a defensive struggle Friday.
Toula and Sparrow connected for a 14-yard score to give Davis (5-3, 2-0 Region 1) a 7-0 lead with 5:55 left in the first quarter. With 6:15 left in the game, Sparrow took a Toula pass 31 yards to paydirt for an insurance touchdown.
Owen Morris booted a 36-yard field goal for Farmington (3-5, 1-1) late in the second quarter for a 7-3 halftime score.
The Davis offense totaled 262 yards. Toula completed 16 of 26 passes for 171 yards, one interception and the two Sparrow touchdowns. Sam Coleman caught seven passes for 73 yards and Sparrow equaled Coleman’s yardage with five catches. Kysen Gallegos led Davis in rushing with seven carries for 60 yards.
The Darts’ defense held Farmington to 218 total yards. Bridger Young had 11 tackles. Cooper Rigby, Dexter Frasure and Austin Yeates each had 10 tackles, with Yeates recording one interception and one sack.
ROY 20, NORTHRIDGE 16
LAYTON — Gunner Pearson ran for two touchdowns and passed one more to rally Roy to 13 fourth-quarter points in a comeback win at Northridge.
Pearson finished 17 of 23 for 241 yards through the air to lead Roy (4-4, 3-2 Region 5), connecting with Tyler Dickson for a touchdown. Dickson had three catches for 85 yards, and picked off a Liam Fresques pass on defense. Riley Jeppesen added 72 yards on six receptions. Pearson ran 20 times for 65 yards, and Bryton Ketcham added an interception.
Northridge (2-6, 0-4) did not report stats.
MORGAN 42, GRANTSVILLE 7
MORGAN — Owen Gilson passed for five touchdowns and Morgan celebrated Homecoming with a big win over Grantsville (5-3, 1-2 3A North).
Morgan (7-1, 3-0) opened the scoring on their first offensive play, a halfback pass from George Thurston to Rhett Larson that went for a 76-yard touchdown. Gilson then threw three consecutive second-quarter scoring strikes to Thurston — two 5-yard heaves sandwiching a 1-yard shovel pass.
With 12 seconds left in the first half, Owen Belliston took a Gilson pass 22 yards for a touchdown and a 35-7 halftime score. Larson capped the scoring on a 72-yard catch-and-run with 4:05 left in the third quarter.
LAYTON CHRISTIAN 53, PAYSON 21
LAYTON — Colton John passed five touchdowns to lead Layton Christian to a home win over Payson.
Layton Christian (7-1) opened the scoring on a Johns 25-yard touchdown pass to Memphis Hunkin. Synic Harvey took a Johns pass 50 yards for a score. Late in the first quarter, Chris Munroe scored on a 3-yard run for an 18-0 lead.
After Payson scored on a short pass to make the score 18-7, Harvey returned the ensuing kickoff 87 yards for a score. Johns hit Jahmi Harrison-Bismillah for a 19-yard score and a 32-7 lead.
LCA stopped Payson at the 2-yard line and, on third down, Johns hit Harvey behind the Payson defense for a 98-yard touchdown pass and a 39-7 halftime lead.
After a Payson 71-yard touchdown pass, Johns connected with Harrison-Bismillah for an 11-yard touchdown. Munroe capped the scoring with a 3-yard rushing touchdown midway through the fourth quarter.
MTN CREST 49, BEAR RIVER 35
HYRUM — Bear River scored four rushing touchdowns but it wasn’t enough in a region loss at Mountain Crest.
After Bear River (5-3, 3-2 Region 11) spotted Mountain Crest (5-3, 2-3) a 13-0 lead, Bennett Allen scored on runs of 11 and 8 yards to give the Bears a 14-13 lead with three minutes left in the first half. MC took the lead for good at 21-14 on a touchdown pass and two-point conversion with four seconds left in the half.
Preston Wilkinson scored on a 1-yard run with 5:07 left in the third quarter to make the score 28-21. MC took a 14-point lead on a 4-yard run, then Dalton Marble scored on a 2-yard dive to pull Bear River to a 35-28 deficit.
The Mustangs retook the 14-point lead on a long run. BR responded with a 71-yard pitch-and-catch touchdown from Wilkinson to Glaiden Behrens for a 42-35 score. Mountain Crest put the game out of reach on an insurance touchdown with 4:42 left in the game.
