PLEASANT VIEW — There was already the potential of a painful experience for Weber in its game against Davis, as starting quarterback Carter Payne was ruled out of the contest due to a broken leg.

Davis just inflicted the agony earlier than the error-prone Warriors might have hoped, with two touchdowns and two safeties in the first quarter.

The Darts won the Region 1 football championship outright, walloping Weber 52-6 in a mercy-rule victory on Wednesday night.

“Leave no doubt; that was kind of our motto this week. We didn’t want to share it,” Davis co-captain Sam Coleman said. “We’re the best team in the region and we wanted to play like it … show it’s just ours.”

Coleman, a Utah State commit, scored on two long touchdown plays in the first half — a kick and a pick — and the Darts led 39-0 at the break.

“It was a good game. I was happy that special teams and defense kept it moving and we were able play as a complete team; we had a good day,” Coleman said.

Weber elected to kick off instead of punt after the first safety, with Coleman and Bode Sparrow back to return for the Darts.

The ball floated to Coleman, he faked a reverse to Sparrow, rolled right and raced 79 yards for a touchdown midway through the first quarter for a 9-0 lead.

“Everyone in the state knows who Bode Sparrow is, so they would have thought we were trying to get it to him, and that left it up to me,” Coleman said. “I’m a baller too, and I called my own shot. I said to the coach, ‘give me this one,’ so I kept it and it worked out for the best.”

On the later pick-six, Coleman, also a cornerback on defense, said the Darts knew Payne was probably out and they prepared a little differently for a new quarterback, “hopefully getting some picks off of that.”

With Weber driving, Coleman stepped in front of a Warrior receiver 5 yards deep in the end zone, snared the errant pass and rocketed the length of the field the other way.

“I’d been keying on them doing comebacks all week and I’m lucky the defensive lineman was able to get in his face and made him throw kind of an off-ball,” Coleman said. “I was right there and was able to grab it. I got some good blocks from the D-line and linebackers, and saw some open road and took off.”

Coleman’s two touchdown saunters sandwiched three other Davis (7-3, 4-0 Region 1) scores in the first half.

Kysen Gallegos (14 carries, 85 yards) scored from 3 yards out late in the first quarter, making it 18-0, then quarterback Paden Toula tossed two touchdown passes in the second stanza.

“I didn’t have my best game today, but I came back and responded to a slow start (on offense),” Toula said. “We established the run in the first quarter, on one drive where we went the whole field, and that opened things up.”

Toula threw a 32-yarder to Briggs Taylor at the 7:47 mark of the second quarter and went 21 yards to Cooper Rigby late in the period.

He completed 11 of 16 for 107 yards and the two touchdowns.

“That was a good touchdown to Cooper,” Toula said. “He doesn’t have a whole lot of catches this year, but he ran a great route and was wide open in the end zone.”

With a running clock in the second half, both teams scored a touchdown in the third quarter.

Weber (5-5, 1-3) got on the scoreboard with 4:35 remaining on a 71-yard touchdown pass from backup QB Kellan Carter, in for Payne, to Creed DeVries.

Carter finished 12 of 21 passing for 157 yards and the lone touchdown.

Backup Davis quarterback Cam Moody, subbing for Toula, connected 16 yards to Jaxton Itaaehau with 34 seconds left.

High school rules direct a game to be called if a team leads by 44 points in the fourth quarter, and Brooks Bailey ended the things for the Darts on a 16-yard run with 6:12 to go.

“I wanted to get our backups in. I have a lot of friends that don’t get to play as much because we’re such a stacked team,” Coleman said. “But I’m happy to close it out and go home early.”
