Prep football roundup: St. Joseph wins first playoff game with record 84 points
OGDEN — No. 8 St. Joseph Catholic High football earned the first playoff win in program history and set a team record for the most points in a single game to beat No. 9 Altamont (1-10) by a final score of 84-30 on Friday night.
Keenan Campbell passed for four touchdowns for St. Joseph (4-6). Izaiah Hebert scored four touchdowns on Campbell passes of 36, 23 and 9 yards, and a 70-yard interception return that capped the scoring.
“I am very proud of these boys. Most of the boys on this team have played for this team for the past three years, and year after year, we have knocked on the door and come close to winning a playoff game,” St. Joseph head coach Deshon Butler told the Standard-Examiner in a written statement. “It feels great to celebrate with this group and finally get over the hump and not only win our first game, but also score the most points that this program has scored ever.
“I’m proud of these boys’ effort, preparation, and dedication they put into this week leading into the win.”
Ryan Castaneda ran for three scores, on distances of 65, 51 and 28 yards. Quinn Vasquez scored on a 55-yard run and a 30-yard interception return. Benjamin Watkins scored on Campbell’s fourth touchdown pass for a 25-yard touchdown, and Ryker Christensen scored on an 80-yard run.
The Jayhawks travel to face No. 1 Rich in the quarterfinals on Friday, Oct. 30.
GRANTSVILLE 55, BEN LOMOND 6
GRANTSVILLE — Dashawn Gordon scored on a 69-yard run for the only Ben Lomond points as the No. 13 Scots fell at No. 4 Grantsville in the first round of the 3A playoffs.
Ben Lomond (1-10) started off with a bang, attempting an onside kick on the opening kickoff. Grantsville recovered the try, but the Scots held Grantsville (7-4) to a three-and-out. The Cowboys and Scots traded punts, then Grantsville opened the scoring on a 6-yard run from Cruze Anderson at the 5:02 mark of the first quarter.
After the kickoff, Ben Lomond earned its first first down of the game on a Jadeon Evans 4-yard run to their own 31-yard line on third-and-3. On the next play, Gordon took a Keenan Hayman handoff up the middle, then bounced to the right side and outran the entire Grantsville defense for a score.
Grantsville, who will host No. 5 Richfield in the quarterfinals, responded with four passing touchdowns and one rushing score to take a 42-6 lead into halftime. The Cowboys added a rushing touchdown in the third quarter and closed the game on a Beck Mondragon 21-yard run with 6:15 left in the fourth quarter to trigger the mercy rule.
Ben Lomond’s last playoff win came in 2000, according to Utah prep football historian George Felt.
