OGDEN — One of the Utah’s longest active rivalries, Ben Lomond and Ogden High, which share the Iron Horse Game in football, also makes its competitive and emotional inroads on the soccer pitch.

It’s an invaluable advantage, most coaches would agree, when your side comes out on top against a crosstown rival for a fourth straight win since opening the regular season at just 3-6. Ogden head girls soccer coach Alexis King feels her Tigers turned the corner a while ago.

The Tigers dug up eight unanswered goals for a third regular-season shutout 8-0 at Ben Lomond on Tuesday following three consecutive region wins over Logan, Morgan and Grantsville. The defending 3A champion Tigers opened the regular season dropping six of its first nine tests.

“We’ve really wanted to challenge ourselves,” King, who earned her first career state title in 2025, said.

“And we did, we challenged ourselves for sure, but I feel like kind of getting into region, each game it feels like we’re getting a little bit better and it feels like we’re finding ourselves again and finding out how we play again after coming off a really tough preseason.”

Baylor commit and Ogden senior Elle Weston drove home the first goal of the match, passing Scots junior goalkeeper Camilla Arroyo within the first 19 seconds of the opening half. The Scots let up two more before halftime, and a hip injury removed Arroyo from the second half entirely.

The scoring parade ensued, and, with eight different scorers adding their name to the box score on Tuesday, Ogden set a historic mark for the season. Weston earned the hat trick, and sophomore Paisley Pierce hinted at another with two goals of her own.

It’s a versatile group, King said, and she’s enjoyed working with that depth thus far in her third season in charge of the program. Coming up on 40 career wins as coach, King and Ogden is eager to build a region lead with a home match with Logan (Sept. 22) and follow-up at Morgan (Sept. 24) on the horizon.

“We have some girls that kind of rotate positions,” King said. “I feel like our girls, they’re such good players, you can kind of put them anywhere and they can do a great job of creating opportunities as long as they’re communicating on the field.”

Lacking answers, the Scots open region play with few fireworks up top

Time comes at you fast. Ben Lomond (5-4, 0-4), after chalking up wins in five of its first six matches, is firmly at the bottom of Region 12 after the Ogden loss; Scoring leader Lorena Hernandez (appendix), senior Ashley Quintero (concussion), and sophomore midfielder Aileen Solis (knee) are all sidelined.

Since hanging a 9-2 win at St. Joseph last month, the Scots are three losses deep by a combined score of 24-0 against Morgan, Grantsville and Ogden. Injuries have piled up, and the list now includes Ben Lomond’s starting goalkeeper with Arroyo questionable for Thursday’s home match vs. Logan.

Tuesday saw freshman Maddy Tropp trade her striker’s jersey for a keeper’s kit.

“We need to get those players back,” Espinoza said. “Our demographic and our make-up is different than all of the teams in our region in the sense that we had 26 (total) girls try out, and all 26 made the team – including some that’ve never played before. The progress these girls are making, the positivity they have, even in adversity when we’re having scores like this, that’s the reason I coach here.”

Ben Lomond is looking at an important five-game stretch to close out the back end of the region schedule.

Beginning this first of two region dates with Logan on Thursday, the Scots must find some brand of defense in the coming weeks with heavy-handed opponents like Grantsville, Morgan and, of course, Ogden representing region rematches through the end of the month and first week of October before the playoffs.
