The Silverwolves medaled through all five events — three singles matches and two doubles — at the Region 5 championship, consolidated from a two-day tournament into a one-day footrace on Wednesday at West Field High.

Kira Mitchell, a sophomore, claimed first individually in second singles with a two-set victory over Sophie Stokes of second-place Box Elder. Avie Fisher (first singles) and Jill Widdison (third singles) each finished as runners-up.

Fisher, as of Friday, is the No. 2 first singles player in Utah behind only Lynsey Hatch of Millard.

Millie Shupe and Meg Roberts, a junior-senior duo representing Fremont and the No. 3 doubles pairing in the state, outplayed Box Elder’s Emma Thatcher and Kenadee Lowe through two sets for the gold.

Fremont entered the region postseason winning 14 consecutive team matchups, including a first-place team finish at the Ogden High Tiger Slam to begin the season.

Next up, Fremont prepares for the 5A girls tennis state tournament, beginning at Brighton High School for first-round matches on Saturday, Sept. 26, and concluding Oct. 1-3 at Liberty Park Tennis Center in Salt Lake City.

Harris tapped next Roy boys soccer coach

After two losing seasons, Roy High is rolling with Box Elder alum Preston Harris to revive its boys soccer program in the spring.

In a social post shared by the school on Wednesday, the Royals introduced Harris, a former All-State defender at Box Elder in 2018, as the team’s next head coach in place of David Bischoff, who led Roy to a 3-14 mark during his one-year stint.

Harris comes to Roy from Box Elder, where he helped Kurt Jarman win 52 matches and two region titles as head coach across seven years together.

“I’m excited for the opportunity to lead the Roy soccer program,” Harris said in the school’s announcement. “I want to build a team that players are proud to be a part of, compete for each other and represent (Roy) the right way. I’m looking forward to getting to work with the players, families and Roy community.”

Roy last captured a region title just two seasons ago in 2024, and has one boys soccer state title (2003).
