Davidson — shooting four strokes higher than Monday’s 64-card to finish 132 across his 36-hole region run — defeated runner-up duo Brix Cragun (Syracuse) and Jackson Gross (Davis) who finished 137 apiece following Tuesday’s final round.

Averaging 72 per 18 holes this season, Davidson stepped in front of a talented region en route to his second region win of the year, and the third region event won by a Phoenix golfer this season. Coulson Summerhays won regular-season tournaments at Glen Eagle and Remuda.

“That kid puts in so much work, it’s ridiculous,” eighth-year Farmington coach Eric Bumstead said. “To see him actually peaking right now to shoot scores like that and the smile on his face, it’s so worth it. I love it for him.”

With a fifth team title since winning a first in 2018, the Phoenix opened the afternoon as the No. 1 program in 6A and finished the day carding 552 as a team in the final region event of the fall before state next month.

Davidson, Griffin Belnap (T-5th, 141), AJ Paulson (T-5th, 141), Coulson Summerhays (T-9th, 142), and Max Clapham (T-13th, 145) all represented Farmington in the top 15. All five landed on the First Team All-Region list, too, as Bumstead celebrates a second region title in two years.

“It’s the whole reason you do it,” Bumstead said. “It’s something they can take away now for the rest of their lives to know they accomplished that.”

Elsewhere in the top 15, Layton teammates Ryan Liechty and Madden Barnes, two of the region’s golfers to watch at the 6A state tournament next month, tied for fourth individually at 141 across the two-day event.

Weber, too, had success with Hayes Torgersen carding 141 overall in a four-way tie for fifth place. Ben Bosewell (T-9th, 142) and Stockton Jardine (T-13th, 145) were crucial in leading Weber (569) to a second-place team finish.

The region’s deep, Bumstead said, and he’s eager to see just how those faces that lit up the regular-season links translate their play to Saratoga Springs for the 6A state tournament, from Oct. 12-13 at TalonsCove Golf Course.

“We always have a qualifier to see who gets to play the next week, and the first four (players) always qualify, but I love how the second and fourth, a lot of times, had to shoot one or two (strokes) under par even to make (our) top 8,” Bumstead said. “It’s been great. We just had a sophomore, AJ Paulson, make First Team All-Region, you know, so there’s a lot of that going on where you can see them building up for the future.”

Herzog hoists second Region 5 title

Winning the day by seven strokes, West Field’s Mack Herzog netted his second region title and helped his school reach its first-ever boys golf region title on Tuesday at Lakeside Golf Course in West Bountiful to finish the Region 5 championship tournament.

Herzog, a junior, finished with 102 overall and a final card of 67 in Tuesday’s final round. The Longhorns placed first overall with 435 team strokes, defeating second-place Fremont (441). West Field’s Ethan Luna, Fremont’s Luke Manning and Box Elder’s Gavin Wight finished in a three-way tie for runner-up at 109.

Next up, the best of Region 5 prepare for the 5A state tournament, slated for Oct. 12-13 at Bountiful Ridge Golf Course.
