Maberry grand slam sparks Raptors to 11-1 win over Vibes

By Brett Hein - | Sep 1, 2021

David Maberry annihilated a grand slam to center field in the third inning, sparking the Ogden Raptors to an 11-1 win Wednesday over the Rocky Mountain Vibes to open a six-game series in Colorado Springs.

Nico Tellache returned from the injured list and was his usual best on the mound, throwing six innings and giving up one run on five hits, striking out five to earn the win for the Raptors.

Tellache’s only allowed run came in the fifth when Carlos Gallardo lined a ball to Josh Broughton in right. Broughton appeared to have a great jump on it, but may have lost it half-way there, and the ball careened off his leg to center field. Gallardo got a triple and later scored on a single.

Ogden took a 1-0 lead in the first after Broughton led off with a triple and scored on a single from Pavin Parks.

In the third, Jakob Goldfarb singled in a run to make it 2-0 and Parks drew a walk to load the bases for Maberry. On a 1-1 pitch, Maberry got every last piece of a fastball down the middle and his ball soared well over the 410-foot mark in straightaway center for his grand slam.

With two outs later in the inning, Ogden made it 7-0 when Troy Dixon scored on a wild pitch.

Ogden’s final four runs came in the sixth after Andy Armstrong led off with a triple and scored on a wild pitch. Parks drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 9-1, and Dixon followed with a double to score two for the final 11-1 tally.

Mark Mixon relieved Tellache and threw the final three innings — even the ninth, which continued in an increasingly strong rainstorm that had Mixon stop the game and ask for attention to the mound, which had become slick.

The game finished seemingly just before it wouldn’t be able to proceed any longer as Mixon needed just six pitches to close out the ninth. Mixon hit the first two batters he faced in the seventh, then retired the next nine in order, striking out two.

The Raptors outhit the Vibes 15-5. Aldo Buendia had two hits for Rocky Mountain. Broughton had three hits for Ogden and four others tallied two hits.

The series continues at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
