Ogden Raptors blow two leads Sunday, Vibes claim convincing series win

By Brett Hein - Standard-Examiner | Aug 28, 2022

The Ogden Raptors blew two leads Sunday in Colorado Springs, losing the series finale against the Rocky Mountain Vibes 14-11 and dropping the series 1-5.

The Vibes claim the season series 10-8, which is said to be the team’s first season-series victory over any opponent since joining the Pioneer Baseball League in 2019.

Josh Broughton tripled and doubled in the first two innings, scoring twice and driving in two, as Ogden took a 5-0 lead Sunday.

But disaster struck in the second when the Vibes (33-47, 17-17) racked up six hits against Ogden (46-38, 17-19) starter Riley Ottesen. New signee Eric Ezersky took the mound, walked three batters and uncorked three wild pitches, and failed to record an out as RMV scored eight runs for an 8-5 lead.

Sidney Duprey got out of that second, and he and Miguel Cirino threw well enough to allow Ogden to reclaim the lead.

Sonny Ulliana continued his tear at the plate, doubling in a run in the third. Outfielder Brian Dansereau cashed in a grand slam in the fourth to put Ogden ahead 10-9, then singled in another run in the fifth for an 11-9 lead. Dansereau finished with six RBIs.

Evan Parker took the mound for Ogden in the sixth and gave up the lead, allowing two singles, a walk and a two-run double to Nick Michaels to put the Vibes ahead 12-11. Brandon McCabe threw the final 2 2/3 innings but couldn’t stop the rally right away in the sixth. He gave up an RBI double and single, with the first run charged to Parker, to make it 14-11.

Ogden appeared to have the makings of an answer in the eighth when Reese Alexiades led off with a single and Freddy Achecar followed with a walk. But Achecar was erased on an Ulliana fielder’s choice groundout and Ulliana was then picked off.

Ogden does not get its usual Monday travel day and instead begins the final homestand of the regular season at 6:30 p.m. Monday, hosting the Billings Mustangs (45-37, 20-16).
