Ogden Raptors first baseman Freddy Achecar hits the ball in a game against the Grand Junction Rockies on Friday, May 27, 2022, at Lindquist Field in Ogden.

OGDEN — Ogden first baseman Freddy Achecar came through with two big swings, Raptors pitchers held Grand Junction batters to three hits and the home team defeated the Rockies 10-4 on Saturday night at Lindquist Field.

The scoring started with Ogden infielder Jesus Valdez. Deftly playing third base on Saturday night, he opened the tally in the bottom of the second by sending a solo home run halfway up the scoreboard in left field to make it 1-0.

Achecar led off the bottom of the fourth by sending a no-doubter to the centerfield side of Raptor Ridge for a 2-0 lead.

Five Raptors pitchers held the Rockies to just three hits. Starter Gunnar Groen held Grand Junction to zero hits through four innings, but an error and a dropped third strike compounded the two hits he finally gave up in the fifth. When Nico Popa doubled to left-center, he cleared loaded bases and put the Rockies up 4-2.

Ogden answered in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs, outfielder Anthony Ray poked a single over the shortstop and outfielder Josh Broughton drew a walk. That brought up Achecar, who went with a fastball the other way and lifted a three-run homer to left-center, putting the Raptors back on top for good at 5-4.

Groen struck out six and walked three in 4 1/3 innings.

Raptors reliever Jake Mulholland took over for Groen and ended the fifth-inning rally with two quick outs.

Jack Cunningham pitched hitless sixth and seventh innings, then Miguel Cirino followed with a 1-2-3 eighth inning. Grand Junction went 12 outs between hits and got its third and final one on a double from Jaylen Hubbard in the ninth inning against Dylan Pearce. But Pearce got a strikeout and groundout to end the game.

After Achecar put Ogden ahead in the fifth, catcher Coleton Horner and shortstop Fox Semones each hit RBI doubles in the sixth to make it 7-4. Ray singled in two runs, then later stole second base and scored on an error to cap the sixth inning, and cap the scoring at 10-4.

Four games in, the season’s opening series is knotted 2-2 but rain threatens the conclusion Sunday and Monday. Both games are set for 2 p.m. starts.
