Ogden Raptors win weather-shortened road game over Vibes 8-3
Two big innings led the Ogden Raptors to victory Wednesday night in Colorado Springs, clinching a series victory over the Rocky Mountain Vibes.
The Raptors won Wednesday’s contest 8-3, a game shortened to seven complete innings due to weather issues. That gives Ogden (16-10) six wins in its last seven contests. The Raptors have not lost a series so far this season.
Jake Mulholland picked up the win in a six-inning start for the Raptors. Jacob Barfield drove in Brandon Crosby with a sacrifice fly in the first inning before the lefty Mulholland kept the Vibes off the board while his team built a lead.
After more than a year with the team awaiting the resolution of visa issues, Canadian first baseman Dane Tofteland made his Raptors debut Wednesday night. He walked in his first at-bat and scored on a Coleton Horner groundout to knot the game 1-1 in the second inning.
Juan Teixeira hit the third of three consecutive singles in the third for Ogden, scoring Nick Ultsch for a 2-1 lead.
Tofteland helped push across two runs in the fifth, putting a ball in play for one of Rocky Mountain’s three errors on the night when RMV third baseman Dusty Stroup committed his mistake. Rafael Narea added a single to score Tofteland and push the score to 5-1.
RMV first baseman Casey Petersen launched a home run off Mulholland in the bottom of the fifth to make it 5-2.
Ogden put the game away in the sixth with three more runs: a Dakota Conners sacrifice fly to score Sal Gozzo, a Reese Alexiades single to score Ultsch and a Teixeira double to score Alexiades.
With an 8-3 lead in the bottom of the seventh, Jon Rice took over for Mulholland and pitched around his own trouble. After a strikeout, he walked two and hit another to load the bases full of Vibes, then got Stroup to ground into an inning-ending double play.
Ogden hit in the top of the eighth and Marshall Shill took the mound for the Raptors in the bottom half, recording a flyout. The game then paused for about 25 minutes and then was called due to weather.
The two teams finish the three-game series at 6:35 p.m. Thursday.
