Early homers help Raptors cruise in 13-5 landslide over Grand Junction
Raptors, Jackalopes continue series (2-2) Saturday
OGDEN — Connor Bagnieski and Christopher Sargent set the tone early for the Ogden Raptors in a 13-5 rout of the Grand Junction Jackalopes on Friday night at Lindquist Field. The Raptors used the pair’s two first-inning homers to ride a wave of 13 hits and no errors to even the series 2-2.
Mitchell Stone (6.0 IP, 8 H, 4 R) put together a strong start for himself, helping hold the Jackalopes (23-40) to just nine total hits with the win. The Raptors (28-36) put on a clinic at the plate behind Bagnieski (2-3, 4 RBI) and Drew Brutcher (2-4, 4 RBI).
Ogden wasted little time getting on the board first with two solo home runs from Bagnieski and Sargent making for an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Grand Junction answered back in the second when Calyn Halvorson smacked a solo shot over the left-field fence to make it a one-run ballgame.
In the bottom of the third, the Raptors tacked on two more runs on RBI singles hit by Sagrent and Nick Ultsch. Those runs set up big fourth and fifth innings for the Raptors, as a string of home runs between Bagnieski and Brutcher opened the floodgates for a 12-2 lead.
The Jackalopes answered in the sixth with a sacrifice RBI from David Rivera and an RBI single by Ethan Smith driving in two combined runs. The Raptors got right back to work in the bottom side, as Brutcher made it a 13-4 lead bringing home Jon Rice from third on a fielder’s choice.
Silent through the seventh, Ogden allowed another run – a sacrifice groundout by Smith – to set up a manageable ninth inning up eight runs.
The Raptors and Jackalopes continue their series Saturday at Lindquist Field. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
