Composed Macca helps Raptors take series lead in 3-1 win over Grand Junction
Raptors, Jackalopes finish series Sunday at 2 p.m. in Ogden
OGDEN — Chris Macca allowed just five hits and one run in a 3-1 win for the Ogden Raptors over Grand Junction on Saturday night at Lindquist Field. The Flordia native silenced the Jackalopes after the first, leading up to a pair of big answers late.
Raymond Gil (1-3, RBI) and Pearce Howard (1-3, 2 RBI) provided two key home runs down the stretch, as the Raptors (29-36) matched Grand Junction (23-41) with seven total hits and no errors on the night.
The Jackalopes claimed a 1-0 lead right from the top of the first on a two-RBI sacrifice groundout to second base. Apart from Evan Massie walking Nick Ultsch in the bottom of the second, the Raptors’ best chance at a run came in the fourth on a single by Jack Cone.
Ogden caught the break it needed in the bottom of the seventh. Gil delivered the Raptors’ first run of the night with a solo homer past left field. Howard followed up with a two-run slam of his own, bringing Ultsch home with him for a 3-1 lead.
A base hit by Connor Bagnieski and two walks by Grand Junction’s Brandon Ross filled the bases in what looked to be a key opportunity for the Raptors to find some insurance in the bottom of the eighth – but it wasn’t to be, as Ultsch popped out to center bringing up the ninth.
Raptors closers Christian Griffin (1.0 IP) and Dylan Matsuoka (1.0 IP) caught all three batters – Sam Kuchinksi, David Rivera and Ethan Smith – to secure the win in the top of the ninth.
The Raptors and Jackalopes close their series Sunday at Lindquist Field. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
