Ogden Raptors split doubleheader to open road series at Billings
The Ogden Raptors opened the team’s six-game road series Wednesday night in Billings with a victory over the Mustangs before the two teams opened the nightcap of a doubleheader, scheduled after the planned series opener Tuesday was rained out.
The win was Ogden’s fifth in the last six games, the beginnings of a streak the Raptors need to push for a second-half playoff berth.
The Raptors looked to extend that streak with early success in Wednesday’s second game but ultimately lost in a relative route.
Ogden (34-40, 12-14 second half) and Billings (34-40, 12-14) play again at 6:35 p.m. Thursday.
MUSTANGS 12, RAPTORS 6
In Wednesday’s second game, Ogden took a 4-0 lead in the first when Raymond Gil doubled in two runs and later scored on a passed ball.
But that turned quickly when Billings outfielder Gabe Wurtz socked a two-run homer in the second and a three-run blast in the fourth.
Wurtz’s second dinger was part of a miserable inning for Ogden starter Mitchell Stone in which the Mustangs recorded five hits in five batters to begin the inning. The final hit in the sequence ended Stone’s night when Abe Valdez hit a two-run homer to put Billings ahead 7-4.
The Raptors briefly cut it to 7-6 when True Fontenot (double) and Pearce Howard (single) drove in runs in the top of the fifth.
But Billings plated four more runs, though only one earned, with Nico Saltaformaggio on the mound in the bottom of the fifth.
Stone took the loss. Brendan Medoro got the win for Billings, as he and Cam Tullar combined to strike out 10 and walk just one in the seven-inning contest.
RAPTORS 7, MUSTANGS 5
In Wednesday’s first game, the Raptors burst to a 6-0 lead and avoided disaster in the bottom of the seventh to hang on for a win.
Nick Ultsch (single), Jack Cone (sacrifice fly), Raymond Gil (home run) and Landen Barns (single) drove in an early run apiece around Cole Jordan’s two-RBI double for the 6-0 lead after three innings.
Raptors starter Gabriel Pacheco ran into trouble in the fourth, giving up a leadoff solo homer to catcher Dylan Leach to open the frame. Two singles and an error loaded the bases for Billings; Pacheco walked home a run to make it 6-3, then Shane Gustafson relieved him and got a groundout to end the threat.
Gustafson got the win for that and an out to begin the fifth, giving him a clean line in 2/3 of an inning pitched.
With Dawson Lane throwing a strong 3 2/3 innings to close for Billings (two hits, no runs, six strikeouts, no walks), the game cruised into the bottom of the seventh when Ogden’s Dylan Matsuoka issued three walks and gave up a single.
A fielder’s choice RBI groundout made it 7-5 but, with two outs and the tying run on base, Matsuoka got shortstop Blake Evans to pop out to end the game.
Jordan, Ultsch and Pearce Howard each had two hits for Ogden; Howard scored two runs.
