Grant Taylor aces Raptors and Billings beats Ogden 7-1
The Ogden Raptors could not threaten Billings starter Grant Taylor and the Mustangs put away the visitors in a 7-1 decision Thursday night at Dehler Park.
Taylor aced the Raptors by allowing one run on three hits, striking out nine and walking one in eight innings.
The right-hander struck out the side in the top of the first and cruised from there. He faced 28 batters, four over the minimum — one coming on a fielding error.
Drew Brutcher hit a solo homer in the fifth to avoid a shutout for Ogden (34-41, 12-15 second half), which trailed 4-1 at that point.
The domination was thorough; Ogden did not take an at-bat with a runner in scoring position until the eighth inning. That’s when True Fontenot hit a two-out double and took third on a wild pitch, but Taylor ended his night with a bang, leaving Fontenot 90 feet away by striking out Jack Cone.
The Raptors had just four hits in the game; Chris Sargent and Nick Ultsch added singles.
After Brutcher’s homer, Billings (35-40, 13-14) started to put the game away. Ogden starter Chris Macca balked home a run in the fifth and the Mustangs ended his night in the sixth with a Brendan Ryan solo home run.
Shawn Triplett took over for Macca and Billings infielder Blake Evans doubled in a run for the final 7-1 tally, the home team’s only extra-baser in a 10-4 hit advantage.
Ryan drove in two and he, Dylan Leach and Casey Harford each totaled two hits for Billings.
The two teams play again at 6:35 p.m. Friday.
