Idaho Falls homers way past Ogden Raptors 13-8

By BRETT HEIN - Standard-Examiner | Aug 22, 2024

The Ogden Raptors led 4-2 early but visiting Idaho Falls slugged its way to a 13-8 win Thursday night at Lindquist Field.

RBI doubles from Nick Ultsch (first inning) and Jack Cone (fourth inning) helped get Ogden ahead 4-2 through four, potentially setting up starter Matthew Hess for a win. Hess tossed four innings, pitching around four walks by striking out five and allowing one earned run on two hits.

But Idaho Falls (34-47, 14-19 second half) got its offense going as soon as Hess departed, tagging Shawn Triplett for two singles and a double to open the fifth inning. The double, a groundout and a fielder’s choice each plated a run and the Chukars led 5-4.

Raptors relievers Quinn Waterhouse and Nico Saltaformaggio pitched the game into the eighth at the same score after Ogden (36-45, 14-19) failed to plate Pearce Howard following his one-out triple in the seventh.

It went south in the eighth for the home team when, after Cameron Edmondson struck out a batter to start the frame, he walked three straight Chukars hitters to load the bases. Christian Griffin took the ball to try and pitch out of it, but shortstop Anthony Mata launched a grand slam instead.

Thomas McCaffrey added a two-run homer in the ninth that ballooned the Idaho Falls lead to 13-5. Elliott Good hit a solo home run for Ogden as part of a three-run effort in the bottom of the ninth, but it wasn’t enough.

Howard and Ultsch each totaled three hits as Ogden outhit Idaho Falls 14-10, but committed six errors. Mata and Grady Morgan each had three hits for the Chukars.

The two teams play again at 6:30 p.m. Friday.

Starting at $4.32/week.
