Ogden Raptors give up game-long lead, swing way to 16-14 win at Missoula
The Ogden Raptors opened the final series of the first half holding the lead for most of the way at Missoula, gave up six runs to the Paddleheads in the bottom of the eighth inning to cough up that lead, then plated six runs of their own in the top of the ninth to claim a 16-14 victory Friday night.
Ogden’s Chris Sargent hit a two-run home run in the top of the first and the Raptors (22-24) led until the eighth frame.
The wheels fell off for reliever Christian Griffin in the eighth, and what was scored as an inside-the-park grand slam from Missoula’s Cameron Thompson turned what was once a 9-3 Ogden lead into a 13-10 advantage for Missoula (35-11).
Patrick Chung added a solo homer for the home team and it seemed Ogden would be out of luck.
Ogden shortstop Cole Jordan drew a leadoff walk as Missoula went to Ethan Swanson on the hill to close the newfound lead.
Two more walks, a single and a hit-by-pitch cut the deficit to 14-12 as the Raptors moved one base at a time but, with two outs, Ogden needed one big swing.
Outfielder Nick Ultsch delivered with a triple to right-center field, clearing the bases for a 15-14 lead.
Sargent, who led the Raptors with five RBIs, singled to plate Ultsch for an insurance run reliever Brayden Bonner wouldn’t need.
After recording the final out of the eighth, Bonner gave up one single but otherwise struck out the side to end a roller-coaster victory for Ogden.
Sargent and Pearce Howard each totaled three hits, Ultsch drove in four runs and Connor Bagnieski had three RBIs.
Nico Saltaformaggio allowed six runs (five earned) on nine hits, striking out five and walking two in his four-inning start for Ogden. Shawn Triplett issued a walk and hit a batter, but allowed no hits and no more baserunners in two scoreless relief innings.
Ogden won despite surrendering four home runs and five doubles.
The two teams play again at 7:05 p.m. Saturday, then finish the series and the first half at 2:05 p.m. Sunday.
