Tuesday brought those two teams back together for the second (and final) time of the 2024 season and Ogden’s improvement was evident.
But the Raptors gave up a 4-0 lead and lost when the Owlz hit two home runs in the ninth inning to claim a 6-4, walk-off win in Windsor, Colorado.
Ogden (25-30, 3-4 second half) got solo home runs from Elliott Good in the third, Chris Sargent in the fourth and Nick Ultsch in the sixth. Sargent also scored on a throwing error in the sixth and the Raptors had a 4-0 lead.
Through five innings, Ogden starter Eli Elliott was sensational, allowing zero runs on three hits. But that changed in the sixth inning when Northern Colorado opened the frame with four hits and a sacrifice fly, cutting the score to 4-3 and forcing Elliott out of the game.
Meanwhile, the Owlz — whose 5-2 start to the second half has pushed Northern Colorado up to the league’s second-best overall record at 33-21 — held the Raptors to only six hits for the game.
For Ogden, Shane Gustafson, Jon Rice and Dylan Matsuoka held the Owlz to one hit over the next 2 2/3 innings.
Brayden Bonner, who has taken over top closer duties for Ogden, couldn’t close the deal in the bottom of the ninth. With one out, Henry George hit a solo shot to tie the game.
Still, Ogden could salvage the tie and get the game to its first Knockout Round of the season. But one out away from ending regulation, Dave Matthews singled and Jackson Coutts hit a walk-off, two-run homer to flip the decision.
Ultsch was Ogden’s only multi-hit batter, going 2 for 4. George and Matthews equaled the Raptors’ hit total by themselves, each tallying three hits for Northern Colorado.
The two teams continue the series at 6:35 p.m. Wednesday.
